Happy New Year - 2020 Welcome to a New Decade!

Ivy Vining Consulting 05.11.2020

QUOTE: "In defiance of the national trend, bus ridership has grown in cities as different as Houston, Columbus, San Francisco, Seattle, and Indianapolis. These places share a key similarity: Their leaders have taken forceful action to improve bus service..." "They have redrawn bus networks to emphasize frequent routes and redesigned streets to put bus riders first. They have created safer walking connections, built dignified places for people to wait for buses, and changed fares so that transit better serves the people who need it most."

The history of the development of our transportation system is rich. On this day in 1951, in Detroit, MI, the first section of the Edsel Ford Expressway opens, financed by BPR, the State, Wayne County, and the city. The expressway is depressed below ground level, with all principal intersecting streets carried over the six expressway lanes. Frontage roads are provided at ground level for local traffic. BPR's annual report for FY 1951 says the opening "was the beginning of a n...ew era of automobile transportation in Detroit." Also on this day in 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signs the Urban Mass Transportation Act to provide additional assistance for the development of comprehensive and coordinated mass transportation systems, both public and private, in metropolitan and other urban areas. The Act vests urban mass transportation functions in the Administrator of the Housing and Home Finance Agency. The authority is shifted to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development before being transferred to the Secretary of Transportation. #history #TransportationSystems #FHWA

With more options than ever for getting around cities, and finite space, the question of how we use this infrastructure, and who controls it, is more important than ever. By regulating how these new transportation options evolve, cities can potentially bring about a more sustainable, multimodal, and less car-centric transit mobility future.

Ridesharing is taking on new levels as Lyft acquires bike share company Motivate on the heels of Urber's acquitision of bike share company Jump. This along with Lyft's app revamping has integrated public transportation. #Peoplecentered #TransportationPlanning
