2020 Our scheduled meetings for 2020 were canceled one by one as the pandemic continued to effect our country. We have now decided to cancel all meetings in 2020. Our research libraries are open. The Archive is open Monday - Friday, 10-3 by appointment and the Commerce Public Library Heritage Room is open Monday - Friday 10-4 and Saturday 10-2. 2021 We are scheduling a meeting at the Historic Courthouse at 85 Washington Street in Jefferson on February 21, 2021 at 2:30 pm. Th...e Courthouse has been going through a restoration for many years and is finishing all phases with an event space in the upstairs courtroom with an elevator. This large space will be available to rent with catering and video projection screen. We will meet upstairs and the restoration process will be detailed and all can see the completed space. Future Projects Our last meeting in February 2020 was at Mt Calvary Baptist Church in Commerce. Archie Chaney and Geraldine Green shared many interesting stories about the community. The Historical Society is interested in gathering their history into a written format and we are making plans to interview some older members of the community when we are able to visit with them next year. Historic Preservationist, Pat Harris-Williams has recently contacted me and would be interested in being involved in this process. Her professional experience will be a welcome addition to our research and her personal knowledge of Commerce where she lived as a young child. Her mother was Bernice (Niecy) Borders Harris and father was retired Sargent Riley (Pete) Harris Sr., lifelong members of Mt Calvary Baptist church. As the Holiday’s come around, remember that the Historical Society has books, maps and prints that would make excellent presents for the history enthusiast. Please remember to renew your dues in January. We continue to preserve and build a collection of research materials for our communities history. Our dues go towards purchasing archival supplies and mailing costs for our newsletter. We are an entirely volunteer organization.
The Commerce Library is now open Saturday 10-2 , Monday through Friday 10-4.
The Archives is reopening
Archives will reopen July 6th! Thank you all for your patience during this unusual time. Archives will be open Mon - Friday 10am - 3pm BY APPOINTMENT ONLY tempo...rarily. Please read the following statement from Charlotte Mealor: COVID-19 guidelines for visitors to Jackson County Historic Archives: Beginning July 6, we will be open by appointment only for the first several weeks. All guests and volunteers are required to wear a mask when interacting with each other. When working with documents and books, we cannot maintain the suggested distance of six feet. Hand sanitizer and gloves will be provided. Because we are in a unique situation right now, please limit the number of people per visit to two (you and one other). We look forward to serving the public by assisting with their family research, while at the same time be cautious and responsible during this stressful pandemic. Contact: Charlotte Mealor, Archives Coordinator at 706-387-7684, or email [email protected]
