Dialectical thinking is finding the balance of two opposites. Experiencing a difficult time, having negative feelings or facing a big change in life doesn't mean you are stuck. Seeing another side of the problem or crisis does not invalidate how serious or painful it is to you. Holding space for opposing thoughts and emotions and using the power of AND can give you a new way to respond to your emotions, to your behaviors and to others in your relationships.
September is National Recovery Month. National Recovery Month is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with mental and substance use disorders to live healthy and rewarding lives. #recoveryispossible https://www.recoverymonth.gov/
Your inner critic produces thinking errors that are developed and reinforced throughout your life. Over time these negative thoughts become beliefs, leading to negative feelings and self sabotaging behavior. In order to silence the inner critic, first become aware of the negative talk, begin to counteract the thoughts and start talking to yourself with the same gentleness and understanding that you give your loved ones and that inner critic will quickly go back into hiding so that you can live the more satisfying life that you deserve.
Is it really anger? Anger is most often our defense against feeling hurt. It is sometimes more acceptable to say that you are angry or to become aggressive rather than to admit feelings of depression, fear or anxiety. Learning to express your feelings, needs and wishes is the first step in beginning to manage unhealthy anger. Next time you are becoming aggressive or hostile, ask yourself what is the real emotion you are feeling?
What is a process addiction? What begins as a pleasurable and even relatively normal behavior can quickly become compulsive and addictive behavior when repeated in excess. Individuals coping with a process addiction may find it difficult to understand why they are struggling to control behaviors that others engage in without issues. Much of society and even treatment providers overlook the profound negative impact that these addictions can have on the addict and their family. If you are struggling, help is available for you or your loved one. You are not alone! https://www.jamielhoffcounseling.com/addictionquiz
It is traumatizing to be living through a global pandemic and living through the viciousness of racism at the same time. tweeted by Dr. Bernice King.
I stand in unity with the black clients I serve and all Persons of Color. I will continue to hold a safe space to cope with racial trauma. I will continue to acknowledge and listen to the pain, grief and rage experienced by BIPOC. I will continue to educate myself and listen. Jamie L. Hoff Counseling Services will donate all profits made this week to the Georgia NAACP and The Southern Poverty Law Center.
Instead of asking, "what is wrong with you?" We should be asking, what happened to you?" #breakthestigma #mentalhealthawareness
Many individuals living with mental illness don’t seek treatment from a mental health professional or seek help from loved ones due to the stigma surrounding mental illness. The feelings of isolation and hopelessness can lead to increased symptoms and often people take their own lives because they aren’t told by anyone that they’re not alone, they can recover and there is hope. Now more than ever it is time to #breakthestigma surrounding mental health. You are not alone, help is available. https://www.jamielhoffcounseling.com/

In these difficult times begin looking within. A lot of old feelings and past traumas may start to surface as we are forced to sit with ourselves. Hold your own hand, be your own best friend, be gentle with yourself, treat yourself as you would someone you love. Allow yourself space and time to heal, don't be afraid to ask for help.
If you are experiencing an increase in mental health symptoms or substance use, you are not alone. Online counseling is available including phone, text or video chat sessions. Find out more at https://www.jamielhoffcounseling.com/services
Codependency can feel normal to those that were raised in a dysfunctional home or are in a relationship with someone who is struggling with addiction.
