I'm still sick to my stomach every minute of every day. I just can't believe he's gone. Sonny was one of my best friends ever. For the last 40 years I began almost every day trying to figure out ways to beat him! Even though we were fierce competitors we never had a dispute or cross word between us. He would call me just to check in, nothing about racing, just to say hi. At the IHRA races we would sneak off and get 9 holes of golf in between rounds of qualifying. One time I ...was able to take him to the Masters at Augusta National (the Holy Grail of sporting events). I was thrilled to go but even more thrilled to be able to do it for him. I remember sitting on the fairway sidelines waiting for Tiger Woods to come by and we both fell asleep! Another time at the Horseshoe Casino in Shreveport LA, we pooled our money and won $1800 in the slots. Sonny had a motorbike he took to the races sometimes to drive to the starting line. So this pandemic year I decided to build a better one. I visioned us both riding them from the pits to the lanes. I regret he didn't get to see it. Today Sonny will be laid to rest In Lynchburg, VA. We were all saddened to hear of the Passing of long time competitor and friend Sonny Leonard. Our thoughts and Prayers go out to Francis, and the rest of Sonny's family, friends, employees and customers. He will certainly be missed, but never forgotten.
