I know...another awareness day, right? Believe it or not, World Mental Health Day was was first celebrated in 1992 when the World Health Organization recognized the increasing need to shed light on mental illness and the effects it has on people around the world. With all we’ve endured in 2020, it might seem that suddenly everyone wants to shed light on what appears to be an alarming rise in mental health disorders. The truth is, I think this pandemic has pushed the stigma a...side and brought to the surface something that has always been taboo to talk openly about. The entire world has experienced changes to their everyday lives due to COVID. Day-to-day, we’re all carrying a layer of stress about life. Not to mention, those who may have already suffered with any level of mental illness are struggling. I want to encourage anyone reading this to do whatever is necessary to take care of your mental health. Whether it is situational stress and anxiety, or something more. Understand that push through is more than a notion...try do whatever you have to do for yourself. Is it a Dr’s visit or several? Is it a therapy session, or several? Is it a rest day, or several? (Also, that thing you went through 15-20 years ago ...or that trauma you experienced for 3 years straight that abruptly ended...will probably take more than a few therapy sessions to battle through...AND THAT’S OK!!!) Some things will require more than daily affirmations and telling yourself I’m goodand that’s ok too! What ever it is, take the time you need and do what you have to do FOR YOU and your long term health and strength. The strength is not in pushing through like nothing is happening inside, the strength comes from giving yourself a chance to truly heal by deciding to start the process! Please, protect your sanctuary. Here are some great places to start if you aren’t sure what to do next! @SilenceTheShame is also a phenomenal platform and resource. #WorldMentalHealthDay #SilenceTheShame #TakeCare #ProtectYourSanctuary
