Good news!! Instructions are out on how to file exclusion amount. :)

You now have another month to file your taxes without an extension. New tax deadline is May 17th. This will also apply to any estimates or tax balances that were previously due on April 15th, they have also been extended until May 17th. We will keep you up to date on any additional changes. Hopefully we will hear soon regarding the reporting of the unemployment. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Regarding change in unemployment... If you are our client and we have not already submitted your return prior to the new changes, we are holding your return until we have clear and concise guidance from the IRS on the reporting of unemployment, both taxable and nontaxable. We are crossing our fingers that this will happen this week. Once we know exactly what the plan is, we will quickly get these returns to you. Please call our office if you have any questions or concerns.

So as many of you are not aware, yesterday changes were made to the way that unemployment is taxed. Prior to yesterday, all unemployment was taxed for federal purposes. Now the first $10,200 of unemployment is non taxable for most people (there are income limitations for high income earners). As of now if you have already filed your 2020 taxes and received unemployment benefits, you will have to amend your return to correct your income based on these changes. Personally hoping the IRS will automatically make these adjustments for people, but we have not heard that yet. We will keep up to date on this and let you know of any additional information that becomes available!! Let us know if you have any questions!!
