Statement from the President & CEO KIDazzle Child Care, Inc. A Broken Hearted Mother As the mother of two African American sons, my husband and I had the talk with them both. In African American families the talk is almost a rite of passage in the inevitable event that they were stopped by a police officer. We counseled them to roll the window down before the police approached, always say yes/no sir, keep their hands at the top of the steering wheel, ask for permission... to get any information the police requested, move slowly, never talk back, never resist any directive. Every African American family gives that talk because they know the chance is high that their children may not come home after such an encounter. Our only goal in giving the talk is for our children to live. Last month we witnessed the murder of Ahmaud Arbery while out for a jog in Brunswick, Georgia and the killing of Breonna Taylor, a healthcare worker, as she slept in her bed in Louisville, Kentucky. As the month ended, a Minneapolis, Minnesota policeman knelt on the neck of George Floyd for 8 minutes and 46 seconds crushing the life out of him while he was handcuffed on the ground. Mr. Floyd cried out I Can’t Breathe several times but when he called for his dead mother my heart broke. I believe the hearts of mothers all over the world, in that moment, broke as well. The world said, Enough is Enough and Black Lives Matter!! KIDazzle is committed to do our part to reduce and eliminate racism. We stand with Black Lives Matter and other organizations that are peacefully protesting for an end to police brutality and racial injustice. We stand with our teachers, that are mostly black and brown, that are grieving the loss of another black life. We stand with our communities as they try to find a new way to talk about racism. If you are not a person of color, we welcome you and invite you to help eliminate racism; perhaps not in our lifetime but maybe, just maybe, in the lifetime of our children. Children are not born with racist views. It is a learned behavior. As we work with the children and families in our care, we want to ensure that we are teaching love, teaching empathy, teaching sharing, teaching tolerance, teaching kindness and teaching forgiveness. We want to instill in all of our children a sense of wonder and excitement and the knowledge and confidence that they can do anything they undertake. We want them to feel hopeful for a bright future. Ben and I have two beautiful African American grandsons that I pray will not have to hear the talk by their fearful parents. It is my hope that they will come of age in a country that will judge them by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin. When we will no longer have to proclaim Black Lives Matter because we will have reached a place where All Lives Matter. Join us as we work together to make this a reality for all of our children.
