In the aftermath of Dallas and the funeral in Washington DC., Jacqueline Kennedy came to Georgia. Weeks after the November 22, 1963 motorcade horror, she travel...ed to Thomasville, Georgia and stayed at the mysterious Whitney Plantation riding horses. Atlanta to Thomasville is 226 miles. 5,000 acres owned then by John Hay Jock Whitney who was one of the major financial backers of the Gone with the Wind MGM movie. Mr. Whitney was the US Ambassador to the U.K., publisher of the New York Herald Tribune and one of the wealthiest men in the 1963 world. He reached out after the assassination and Mrs. Kennedy accepted. Privacy was the order, employees of the planation were not allowed to tell spouses of her arrival and according to FSU News, Secret Service men were even required to show their credentials when walking around Greenwood’s main house. The visit was kept secret until she appeared for Sunday Mass in Thomasville at St. Augustine Catholic Church. ....After word got out of Mrs. Kennedy's visit, a crowd congregated outside of Thomasville Municipal Airport to see her off; the small-town folk stood in wonder watching America's darling walk gracefully through their quiet town. Her second visit to Thomasville would come in 1967, a few weeks before an announcement of engagement to Aristotle Onassis.
