This Tuesday, March 9th, Danny Wuerffel, Heisman Trophy Winner and Executive Director of Desire Street Ministries located in Atlanta, will be our guest speaker at our weekly virtual meeting. Following his career in football, Danny felt called to serve those in underresourced neighborhoods, which continues to be his focus. In 1996, Danny won the highly acclaimed Heisman Trophy. Wuerffel played college football at the University of Florida, where he quarterbacked the Gators t...o four SEC Championships and UF’s first National Football Title. While at UF, Wuerffel set 17 NCAA and UF records, and won several other awards, including the William V. Campbell Award, given to the nation’s top scholarathlete. Danny graduated with high honors earning a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. The New Orleans Saints drafted Danny in 1997 where he played three seasons. He transferred to the NFL’s European league, winning the World Bowl Championship and being selected by the European media as the League’s MVP. Wuerffel went on to play for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins before retiring in 2004. Danny is the namesake of the Wuerffel Trophy, the premier college football award for community service. And in 2013, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. After retiring from the NFL, Danny joined Desire Street Ministries and was named Executive Director in 2006. The ministry helps underresourced areas across the Southeast by partnering with leaders to create thriving and sustainable neighborhoods. When ministry leaders thrive, they can reach hundreds of kids and families. Occasionally, Danny will speak to corporate and nonprofit groups, sharing inspirational talks drawn from his decorated college and professional career. He weaves his lifeshaping football experiences into a challenge to serve others. You might also enjoy his book, Danny Wuerffel’s Tales from the Gator Swamp: Reflections of Faith and Football. Danny and his wife, Jessica, have three active kids. He enjoys coaching them and playing flag football when he can. Click the link below to join this virtual meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us//tZcvdeuqpjIuE9YwWBkQzCud8c_RUUxWt We hope to see you then!

Founded by a fellow Kiwanian, AMIS welcomes and connects international college/university students with local American friends in the Greater Atlanta area. With the closing of college campuses and moving to online classes in March, some international students went home, but many stayed on now empty campuses. AMIS has been supporting them through weekly "AMIS Talks" on Zoom, where we provide the opportunity for international students to connect to others in similar situations,... share experiences, and encouragement to get through a tough situation. We have mailed jigsaw puzzles to students who requested them, and we've encouraged our volunteers to reach out to the international students that they became friends with through AMIS programs. I have been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta for a year, and our nonprofit was founded by a Kiwanian in 1978. We have had a long tradition of our Executive Director being a Kiwanian. Irene Wong Executive Director of AMIS
USO wishes all our Kiwanis volunteers a Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month. We miss our regular Saturday Kiwanis volunteers and hope to see the volunteers back soon. Special thanks to our Kiwanis Wheels, who have continued, until last week, the 100-mile round trip to pick up and deliver the sandwiches to the USO Center. As duty travel for the Military Members has been suspended temporarily, we do not need this very valuable resource. Although our USO Center has been closed te...mporarily due to COVID-19 USO Protocol, USO has been busy with outreach services to our Georgia National Guard deployed in support of the pandemic. USO is supporting two Quarantine Camps at Ft. Benning housing more than 2,000 soldiers. USO has been delivering toiletry items, granola bars, trail mix, and the like to the citizen-soldiers. In addition, USO has set up two USO2GOs at Ft. Benning. These are Expeditionary Centers filled with touches of a real USO Center, including mobile furniture, gaming items, snacks, and other essentials. For The Georgia National Guard, USO Mobile has been on the road to deliver "USO Goodness "to the various units across the state. USO has delivered snacks, soft drinks, fresh fruit, recreational equipment, and items such as jump ropes and stretch bands to help give the soldiers some recreational fun after working on the front lines of this virus at Nursing homes, hospitals, and testing sites across the state. Thank you to The Atlanta Kiwanis Club Foundation for helping USO continue our mission to support our service members by connecting them to community, home, and family as they continue their service to our Nation and State during this very serious and unprecedented time. Stay Well, Stay Safe, Stay Strong, with appreciation from a proud Kiwanian, Mary Lou Austin CEO of USO Georgia
Angela Cassidy is the director of community engagement with Ben Franklin Academy. Angela has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Atlant...a for 9 years, and says the club has been a true enjoyment. She loves the people she has met, the camaraderie of the members and the interesting speakers. Thank you for sharing, Angela!
We asked our members to share how they are getting by and what their organizations are doing during these challenging times. A huge thank you to Laura Thomson McCarty, a member for 15 years, who shared this update from Georgia Humanities. Georgia Humanities has turned our National History Day Georgia into a virtual event. Judges across the state and beyond are evaluating the papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances, and websites of 400 students (who have already won at ...lower levels). Funds from the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta Foundation help support NHDGA. Kiwanian Phil Bolton wrote an article in this week’s GlobalAtlanta about one NHDGA student and his documentary-making siblings: https://www.globalatlanta.com/the-cdc-is-the-latest-focus-/

Dear Fellow Kiwanians! In response to the recent recommendation of ‘Social Distancing’ due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the KCA Board of directors met this afternoon and made the decision to cancel our upcoming meetings for March 17th, March 24th, the March 31st 5th Tuesday and April 7th. We will continue to follow the guidance from the State of Georgia and the CDC, and will keep you updated should there be any changes for Kiwanis Club of Atlanta. Please note that the ...Loudermilk Center will be closed through the end of March as well. We all have a role to play in preventing the spread of coronavirus in our community and we ask every member to do their part: Follow CDC hygiene best practices that include regular hand washing for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face, and covering your cough or sneeze. Use non-contact forms of greeting instead of physical contact such as shaking hands. Keep at least 3 feet of distance between individuals at meetings and events whenever possible. Consult your healthcare provider if you (or a member of your family) is at risk for serious illness from COVID-19 before attending other public event. Most children and adults under 60 are not at risk of serious illness from coronavirus. However, adults over 60 and those with a compromised immune system or an underlying health condition may be at greater risk. The decision to cancel our upcoming meetings was not easy, however our KCA member’s health and safety are paramount during these challenging times. Thank you for understanding as we do our part to prevent the spread of coronavirus. We will continue to keep you updated over the next few weeks.
Our speaker tomorrow is Harriet Shaffer, a long time community volunteer and a passionate advocate for Alzheimer’s disease research and support for caregivers dealing with adults with cognitive challenges.
