Roll the dice.

KL Thompson Construction is expanding. We are looking for people that know their way around a construction site, with a diverse skillset. We are primarily looking for carpenters that have the ability to cut and install more complex trim such as crown molding and less complex tasks such as installing deck boards. Creative problem solving skills are a must. If the straight lines and round holes you cut, look like it was done with a hatchet...you MIGHT not be the right guy(s) or... gal(s)for our organization, but if you’re teachable, we can help you enhance your skills. We need positive attitudes, respect for clients and other team members and professional representation of our company. If you have a habit of flicking cigarette butts in the customer’s yard, or otherwise disrespecting their property, we won’t get along. Aside from that, we can probably work with you. You’ll need your own tools and reliable transportation. Top skills get top pay. We have a high demand for quality and we are willing to pay for it. Our good name depends on quality people. If you or someone you know fits this description, we’d like to talk with you. Let’s build! KT

Perspective. Don’t love what you do? Try something different. Finding what you love to do won’t come without a lot of hustle. Get after it. Find your purpose. I feel very blessed to have found what I love, in spite of the fact that it beats my ass, both mentally and physically, day in and day out. Maybe I’m a glutton for pain.

Where we started vs. where we are. Huge transformation on this home in Brooks. That sunroom used to be a screened porch. The deck was leaning and decked with some raggedy old pressure treated decking. Now its Brazilian Ipe, our signature deck. If you want it to last, build it well and use material that won’t be trash in 5 years. More pictures of the complete project to come.

Before and after staircase rebuild. Simple and sleek tapered spindles stand in sharp contrast to this blend of Jacobean and Ebony stain on red oak. Also made some modifications to make that column look like a true column, instead of a lazy man’s budget column.

The jobs where clients give me some custom design liberty, are my favorites. I built this mantel, and fireplace tool holder in my shop. I designed the fireplace tool niche to match an idea for the firewood niche. The inspiration for this came from a childhood memory of my uncle’s home in Sandersville, GA. I remembered that he was able to stock the firewood niche from the garage. His was simply a plywood hatch, which would not have met code requirements today. I had one of my carpenters build a custom door on the garage side that is weather sealed the same as any other entry door. Below that door is more firewood storage.

I enjoy the days that I get to put the tool belt on. It keeps my skills sharp. Jeff and I started taking this one apart about 1pm today. The owner had a little fun with the demo as well. Everyone loves demo. Big progress for a half day of work. The wind was in our sails, (the stringers were remarkably level, which is a rare gift). Gonna be a beauty.

Update on a little kitchen remodel we’re doing for some friends. I pointed out that there was entirely too many recessed can lights in this 10x16 kitchen. 12 is the number. TWELVE... can lights in this kitchen. It’s visible from the International Space Station on a clear night. ... Changing that revealed the real problem. I’m thankful they agreed to let me reduce the number of lights. I found one safety hazard/ code violation after another. The person that did this mess needs some learnin’! Out of 12 can lights, only one was wired halfway decent. The common theme of this kitchen was no grounding. A couple of receptacles were grounded. Zero light switch devices and only one can light were grounded. Wire nuts were either oversized or undersized. The web of wires was ridiculous. I pulled everything out, coiled and labeled everything that I need, and discarded the rest. One of the smaller piles of mess I removed is pictured here. It’s a wonder this place didn’t have an electrical fire. It’s a condo, so this person’s stupidity could have cost the owner and the neighbors their property...or worse. It’s infuriating to come behind someone that has done this kind of work, but I feel blessed to have the skills and knowledge to identify these problems and get them resolved. Do your homework folks. Do you want the cheap guy or the skilled/licensed guy. It’s only your single largest investment (typically) that we’re messing with here. Wanna roll the dice?

I picked up this little trick by following skilled craftsmen right here on Instagram. Now I’m sharing it with you. It sure makes corner clamping easier on this box mantel that I am building. Cut your 45s, align your material and add a few strips of tape. Flip it over and apply your Titebond. Now you’ve seen and heard me say, you can NEVVA have enough clamps. Well, I just happen to have a few sets of these nifty little corner clamps. ... Check your angles and make adjustments to the clamps until you have the perfect 90. Easy peasy.

Progress shots of the massive remodel project that we will be wrapping up very soon. Re-roof under way today. Brazilian Ipe deck coming up next. Final punch out happening inside. One of the best things about this one, the customer has made us feel like we’re just part of the family.

Well, I’m a few hours deep into a little remodel job for a friend down in Hilton Head, and I have found all the evidence that Jack the Hack with a tool sack left behind. I’ll bet he said he was a licensed contractor. Wire splice buried in the wall. ... Load-bearing cased opening made larger with no header and studs that lead to nowhere. Not attached at top or bottom...it must be that new style of floating opening. Even Riley is saying, man...who did this framing job?!

This came across my feed just now and I cringed hard. I follow this DIY’er because she does some pretty cool stuff. This one bugged me, however. I’m not gonna call her out on her own page. It’s not my place and it would be a dick move. So let me just talk about it with my little group of followers, without embarrassing someone else. It’s ok since it’s her house and not something someone is paying her to do. What I can’t get behind, is promoting this fix to others. It’s the ...ol’ caulk and paint to make it what it ain’t, method. This is an opportunity to learn something new. It’s called coping. (See the second image). Learn how to cope your trim and you won’t have to worry about those perfect 45s. It doesn’t take that much more time to do it better. Will this work? Yeah...I suppose, but do you want it to be right, or just alright? #detailsmatter #craftsmanshipmatters
