The Villa Rica Area Historical Society, Inc. has been created out of need, whose purpose is to collect, ...preserve, research, and interpret the heritage of Villa Rica and surrounding areas. We recently learned that an historical home in our city, the Hart House, was in danger of being completely demolished; the city had issued the demolition permit and everything seemed set in stone. But when the story spread out to the community, there was an immediate backlash against the organization wanting to demolish Hart House, as well as against the city for issuing the permit to allow it. It was at this point that the Villa Rica Area Historical Society, Inc. was born; this was the catalyst needed to get caring citizens actively involved with saving local history, before it was gone forever. We have since learned from historians that the type of home it is, an I-home, is very rare for our area, with almost none from that time period surviving this long. And that brings us to today..... There was a go-fund-me campaign in June. Today there is new possibility.

FRIDAY FACTS-OUR COMMUNITY Carroll Connection vans are now on the road and meeting needs BY MICHAEL O'HEARN THE TIMES-GEORGIAN Carroll County has rolled out six new vans to be used as public transportation vehicles.... The Carroll County Board of Commissioners will now allocate a $35,000 annually to match a federal grant for the vans during the 2019 fiscal year. Chairman Marty Smith said the Carroll Connection vans started taking reservations on July 2. "I think people will be surprised at how much the vans will be used," Smith said. "While most people in our county have a dependable mode of transportation, we still have a large population that does not. This will fill that void."The cost for each trip is $3 one way and $6 for a round trip. The vans can be used for a variety of trips, from attending medical appointments to traveling for work and social outings. The service is not a mass transit option, and is available Monday through Friday excluding holidays. To introduce citizens to Carroll Connection, "Ride Along Day" was held Sunday, July 1 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held next to the Carroll County Courthouse parking deck. A second celebration will take place in Whitesburg on Saturday, July 7, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., held in conjunction with the city's annual Fourth of July festivities. Michelle Morgan, Carroll County commissioner and transportation committee board chairman, said the proposition of having a transportation system has been brought up before, but that the people of Carroll County are opposed to having a mass transit system. "I heard the story of a woman whose car broke down and she walked 18 miles down (Highway) 61 from Villa Rica to Carrollton for several days to get to work so that she could pay for her car," Morgan said. "This system is for people like her and, some people might be opposed to it but I'm getting her to work." Morgan said she is appreciative of the initial task force created comprised of Brandy Marenco, Donna Lackey, Darryl Hessel, Randy Williams, Hannah Langley Yates and Brady West to bring this project to fruition in addition to the Carroll County Rural Transit Authority. "I am very appreciative of the initial task force and the Carroll County Rural Transit Authority Board for all their time and talents to bring a much-needed program and sharp branding Carroll County can be proud of," Morgan said. "If I can get people to work and get our senior citizens the things they need in the middle of the day without them feeling like a burden to their children, I've done my job.
