Required screening: W 3:35 5:45 Prof. Navitski Fulfills Multicultural requirement No prerequisites This course offers a survey of film and television by U.S. Latinos, exploring connections with other artforms ranging from murals and traditional printmaking to tattoos and lowriders, and including painting, performance art, and political theater. Topics covered include Hollywood’s troubled history of stereotyping Latinos and Latin Americans; media activism and the Chicano movement of the 1960s; Spanish-language television in the United States; streaming and trans-media narratives such as East Los High; and the unique challenges facing Latinx filmmakers today, even as some of their Latin American counterparts have found unprecedented success in the U.S. media industry.
