Yesterday, I joined over 100 mayors from across the state on a conference call to discuss the ongoing struggle against COVID-19. Leading the call were Dr. Carlo...s del Rio, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean at Emory University, and Dr. Amber Schmidtke, Professor of Microbiology at Mercer University. These are two of the leading experts in Georgia on COVID-19, and both have been engaged in the struggle with this virus since the beginning. The information they shared was alarming and serves as a reminder for us all that we have to do our part to help slow the spread. Here are twelve takeaways and reminders from the conference call: 1. The COVID-19 crisis in Georgia is worsening and fast approaching a catastrophic level. Cases and hospitalizations are increasing beyond available resources, and with the positive tests continuing to climb, many hospitals across the state have little to no ICU bed capacity. 2. Primarily as a result of gatherings during the holiday season, caseloads are predicted to increase significantly in the coming days. Hospitals will be overflowing and in many regions a shortage of nurses and other medical personnel is projected. 3. The wearing of face masks or coverings whenever outside the home, the regular washing of hands and use of hand sanitizer, and the maintenance of a six-foot social distance are the most effective methods we have for slowing the spread of the virus. 4. Vaccines against COVID-19 are starting to be available and although their availability at this point is limited, over the next few months they should become more readily available. It is essential that people receive vaccination as a way to help limit the spread of COVID-19. 5. It is a violation of the Governor’s Executive Order for people to gather in groups of more than 50 persons if they are required to stand or be seated within six feet of any other person. 6. It is a violation of the Governor’s Executive Order for bars to allow more than 50 persons on the premises or to exceed 35% of the fire capacity, whichever is greater. 7. It is a violation of the Governor’s Executive Order for restaurants to have seating arrangements that do not ensure at least six feet of separation from seating to seating or utilize physical barriers to separate groups sitting within six feet of one another. 8. Cases may continue to rise, but ICU and hospital capacities cannot rise exponentially with them. If the situation continues to worsen, it may become harder and harder for hospitals to provide care to every patient that needs it. You do not want to put yourself and others in the position where you or they may not be able to get the care you or they need. 9. The vaccine is here, and it is being administered to more Georgians every day. Regardless of your spot in line, if you take precautions now, you may avoid contracting COVID, and you won’t have to worry about the many known long-term impacts on your health. 10. The very same people you want to gather with are likely the people you most want to protect. Avoiding indoor gatherings now means you can keep each other safe, healthy and alive for gatherings in the future once you are vaccinated, community spread has significantly declined, and herd immunity has been achieved. 11. Many medical professionals expected Georgia’s case rates to climb substantially following the holidays as they similarly climbed after Thanksgiving. Recent data shows that our current case rate per 100,000 residents in Georgia is the highest it has been since the start of the pandemic and at least 60% higher than our summer surge. 12. Georgia has allowed struggling bars and restaurants to remain open so that more small local businesses are not lost. Failing to follow the governor’s guidelines puts your favorite small businesses at risk and may make it even harder for them to keep their doors open. Encourage people to utilize takeout and delivery. I encourage everyone to consider these facts and this advice when making decisions for yourself and for your family. Please make the decision to follow the medical professional's advice. Thank you for making wise choices.

*DON'T FORGET* This weekend is daylight saving time (DLS). Don't forget to turn your clocks back Saturday night before you go to bed. The American Red Cross is advising to ‘turn and test’ this weekend to prevent home fire tragedies: Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older. That’s because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Check the manufacturer’s date of your smoke alarms and follow the instructions.... Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Practice your two-minute escape plan. Make sure everyone in your household can get out in less than two minutes the amount of time you may have to escape a burning home before it’s too late. Include at least two ways to get out of every room and select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone can meet. Our LaGrange first responders including LaGrange Police & LaGrange Fire Department were among the Troup County first responders to receive the COVID-19 vaccine last week from District 4 Public Health. District 4 Public Health is charged with administering the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine to first responders, including fire, EMS and law enforcement personnel who are at increased risk of exposure to the virus. The second round of the vaccine will be given in four weeks. As of Dece...mber 31st District 4 Public Health administered more than 1,400 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to area first responders and healthcare providers. Governor Brian Kemp and Commissioner Kathleen Toomey, M.D., M.P.H., recently announced plans to add adults aged 65 and older to the current group of individuals eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Healthcare workers and staff and residents of long-term care facilities are already in this highest priority group. The expanded administration of vaccine is expected to begin within the next two weeks provided there is adequate vaccine supply available. At this time, District 4 Public Health does not have adequate vaccine supply to include adults aged 65 and older. All counties in District 4 Public Health are currently vaccinating first responders and healthcare providers who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to patients or infectious materials. During the next two weeks, District 4 Public Health staff and county health department employees will work with community partners to plan for increased traffic at Points of Dispensing (PODs). This planning is critical for smooth delivery of the vaccine to the public in a drive through setting. District 4 Public Health will continue to provide updates on www.district4health.org letting the public know when the vaccine becomes available to the community. District 4 Public Health is urging those receiving the vaccine to continue to wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash your hands frequently. While the COVID-19 vaccine is 95% effective in preventing illness in the individual being vaccinated, it is not yet known if the vaccine fully prevents person to person transmission or asymptomatic infections. For more information on Georgia Department of Public Health’s Vaccination Plan go to https://dph.georgia.gov/covid-19-vaccine-rollout-plan. For more information on District 4 Public Health go to www.district4health.org. District 4 Public Health is dedicated to preventing disease, promoting health and protecting our communities against health threats through education, service, advocacy and collaboration. District 4 Public Health serves people of all classes and economic status within Butts, Carroll, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup and Upson counties. Fees are based on income for those without insurance. For more information about District 4 Public Health, visit www.district4health.org.
