Dive Story #25 - Jamie’s Ring A True Story about love, romance, sadness and happiness... [Lake Lanier - Hall County, Georgia Summer 2020] Jamie was eighteen and... wanted some adventure in her life. Her friend had told her about becoming a wrangler at a Dude Ranch. A wrangler! Well, that’s something you don’t do every day! she said to herself. The next thing she knew, Jamie found herself on an airplane bound for the great Midwest. She was going to experience a life unlike anything she had ever imagined. A life completely different from her life in the suburbs where she had grown up. Almost immediately upon her arrival at the ranch, Jamie caught his eye..., and he hers as well. His name was Travis and he was a cowboy. He wasn’t just any cowboy. Travis was a real cowboy. He had grown up with horses and loved everything there was about the great outdoors. He trained horses other men wouldn’t dream of riding. He rode broncos in rodeos. He became part of a cadre of men who understood what hard work was all about and never shied away from what needed to be done, in the saddle and out. He loved being a cowboy and everything that came with it. Jamie and Travis almost instantly became best friends, spending as much time together as possible, and quickly thereafter fell in love. They became inseparable. At the ranch, work started early in the morning and went on until well past sundown. There were rare and wonderful moments, during the nights, when they could steal away together, just him and her... man and woman... both of them desiring and enjoying these special times together. Travis proposed after only three months. It was an informal wedding, surrounded by close friends and family, and it was filled with love and promise for the two heart-bound lovers. Theirs was a love that was a true testament to living life to its fullest. Their life together, on the ranch, was tough with all of the work that constantly needed to be done. They worked day and night to take care of the customers, the people who paid for the experience of becoming cowboys and cowgirls for a week. Life at the Dude Ranch was never dull and was filled with all of the challenges that one could imagine from the old west: birthing calves, rounding up strays, feeding everyone and providing shelter in the rustic cabins. It was a life they both cherished. After three years together, they decided to start a family. They soon welcomed their first child into the world and named him Tucker. Jamie tried to adjust to the challenges of being a mom and taking care of a new baby on a Dude Ranch. It simply wasn’t meant to be. She longed for the care and support her own mother could provide back East. She missed her mom and wished she had someone who could help take care of Tucker. So, after a giving it a go for a year, she packed up and moved back East with Tucker at her side. Travis came to visit whenever he could get away to be with his wife and son. He even tried to find work in and around the ‘burbs where Jamie lived with her parents. It wasn’t in him though. The call of the West ran deep within his bones and haunted him every day and night. After a lot of discussion, they realized that the decision was already made. They had to split up. He would head back to the Midwest and return to being a cowboy. Jamie would keep Tucker and raise him in the suburbs with her parents. They vowed to always keep in touch because they truly were best friends and they knew they would remain so for rest of their life. No matter what. Travis dearly loved his son with all the joy and happiness that came with being a dad. Over the years, Tucker would visit his father every summer and during holiday breaks from school. Tucker loved to ride and wrestle calves and he longed to ride the big broncs, like his father, in the rodeo. Tucker idolized his father, Travis. Travis and Jamie would be best of friends forever. Even across all the miles and though their lives went in two different directions, they still cared deeply for one another. After a time, both of them went on to remarry, each of them finding someone in their world. Ten years later, through it all, they were still the best of friends. Travis bought a ring for Jamie to wear just a year ago so that she could remember their happy times together. Something to remind her of the love that they had shared for each other and for their son, Tucker. Jamie wore the ring every day from the moment he gave it to her. Tragedy struck when they least expected it. Tucker was scheduled to go out for Christmas to be with his dad, his dad's new wife and his step-brother. Things simply didn’t work out the way they were planned, though. Jamie received a call that shattered her world in an instant. Travis, while on his way to work, had been involved in a fatal accident. She heard the details as they were told to her, he had been ejected from the truck, he had died on impact..., but she only knew one thing. She and Tucker would never see him again in this world..., nor would he and she be able share their friendship and the happiness it brought them both, ever again. In his absence, the ring Travis had given to Jamie became more than just a keepsake. It simultaneously brought a smile to her face and a tear to her eye when she thought of it. He was a good man. She struggled with why God had chosen this path for them. She wore the ring every day in order to keep him close and her memory of him strong. To keep her mindful of their brief time together and their shared love of each other and of their son, Tucker. Jamie had a new family and was blessed with two more children. She had a wonderful life with her new husband who was raising Tucker as his own. They enjoyed the lake, boating and the times they shared there, as a family. They were a happy family. The day was gorgeous and they were taking the family out on the lake for a day of fun on the boat. Jamie was helping as they pulled out of the boat slip when the ring got caught as she struggled to pull in the gear. In an instant, the ring slipped off and flew into the lake. She sobbed uncontrollably, fearing that the ring was lost forever. After hearing this story, I knew what I needed to do. There was no question in my mind that I would find this ring. No matter how hard or challenging, I was determined to find Jamie’s treasured ring and return it to her. I don’t know if you believe in good fortune, or the power of the Man above, but it worked for me that day, in an open-water dive. The odds against me finding that ring in thirty-five feet of water were staggering. Somewhere in that general area over there was the location that I had to work with. If you’ve read the stories that I’ve written up to this point, you know what kind of conditions I was operating in. Down deep where the light does not shine. An extremely difficult and technical dive challenge. I circled the mud encrusted bottom with my search light, casting shadows across the unforgiving bottom. I thought of her dear friend, Travis. I knew what this ring represented. It was almost as if he pushed me harder, driving me on, to do the impossible. It was a challenge that I was afraid that I might not be worthy of completing. Still, I pressed on. Two hours later, I saw a small circle in the mud. Could this be it? I thought to myself. What are the odds? Finally, though, there it was. I carefully picked it up, pinched it between my cold fingers and rose to the surface to be met by Jamie. I was greeted with tears of joy. Her eyes, damp with moisture, perfectly expressed her happiness and gratitude. She hugged me over and over. Her life would go on, that ring, miraculously, still with her, knowing that Travis, too, was with her and Tucker. They would be blessed by the love that they shared, from Heaven now, and the love represented by the ring once again. Moral of the Story: We never know what God has in store for us. And the challenges before us. Love conquers all and transcends time and this life that we know on this earth. And hopefully a love that continues for eternity as we all will eventually leave this life to be reunited with our loved ones in Heaven. God Bless each and every one of you. No matter what God you believe in, just that you believe and keep the faith that we will all be together again one day in heaven. Here is the video of the Actual Event. Hope you enjoy it!

Dive Story #24 - A man and his dog. There is a special bond between people and their pets. Having been a dog owner myself, I truly understand the love that we share with our furry friends. Often times these companionships are so strong that we think we know what our pets are thinking just by staring into each other’s eyes. And such was the love that Bryce felt for his beloved friend - a female dog he named Nalla. He was moving out of his parent’s house to live on his own ...Continue reading
