Lake Lanier Olympic Park is hosting two Food Truck Fridays this month and the first is today! Come on out (today) and on Friday, September 25th. The weather is cooling, offering pleasant evenings on the water with live music, good food and drink, and great company on the plaza. Steve Kelley and the Tribute Kings will be performing today. April Rooks is bringing her energy to round out the month, playing September 25th! Community partners participating in today's event include The Georgia Mountain Food Bank, Lake Lanier Rowing Club, Disabled America Veterans, Explore Gainesville, and more. https://www.lakelanierolympicvenue.org/
Road closure: The Corps of Engineers will be closing Buford Dam Road on Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for road maintenance. Highway 20 is an alternate route. Parks with entrances inside the work area on Buford Dam Road will also be closed. Parks closed include: Lower Pool East, Lower Overlook, Lower Pool West, West Bank Turn-out, and West Bank.
Boaters from around Lake Lanier will celebrate patriotism with an idle-speed boat parade. Called the Great American Boat Parade, it will skirt the shorelines of the lake and is expected to include several hundred boats. This is all about patriotism and celebrating our country, said John Gunter, an organizer of the event. The event will be raising money for the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation to benefit families affected by 9-11 and veterans. For a $10 fee, boaters register on ...the Facebook page Great American Boat Parade. Boats will begin marshaling at the dam between 9 and 9:30 a.m. and will be separated by size of boat. Gunter, a long-time boater on Lanier, will lead the parade on his Sumerset houseboat. For more info, search for Great American Boat Parade on Facebook or call 404 268-0976. For more about the organization being supported, visit Tunnels2Towers.org. See more
From Corps of Engineers: Several parks on the south side of Lake Lanier will be partially or fully closed as COE staff remove hazards and inspect areas for public safety. The moves follow last Monday’s severe weather that resulted in toppled trees and damage to some park infrastructure. Parks included in the closures: Van Pugh North (closed), Vanns Tavern (partially closed), Two Mile Creek (partially closed), Day use/picnic area portion of Burton Mill (partially closed; Burton Mill boat ramp remains open).
