Three words: VERTICAL GRAIN CEDAR It is amazing what lumber can turn into when you have the correct hands crafting it into a masterpiece... Our partnership ...with Landmark Preservation on the preservation of the c. 1830 Judge Richard Johnson Law Office in Clinton, Georgia has allowed us to utilize our historical millwork expertise! According to Landmark, the less than 500 sq/ft Law Office will be restored starting this spring and will become a much needed community center with a separate restroom facility. The first and last photos are a sneak peek of millwork beginnings to a beautiful project, preservation of important history and an effort to improve a community. Penn Center has commissioned Innova Architecture, Landmark Preservation, Constantine Engineering Associates, Ohmega Group, F&ME Consultants and Surculus Design to conduct a thorough conditions assessment for six buildings located on their campus, located on St. Helena Island. Those six buildings (in order in which they are shown) are: Arnett House (1937), Gantt Cottage (1940), Retreat House (1968), Jasmine Cottage (1911), Orchard Cottage (1942), and Cedar House (1907). The p...urpose of this assessment is to identify building and site deficiencies in order to make recommendations for future treatment and uses. We are so excited to be a part of this team! As the assessment continues we will do a highlight post for each building. #conditionsassessment #preservationplanning #architecture #landscapedesign #restoration #preservation #rehabilitation #teamwork #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #lowcountry #sthelenaisland #penncenter #blackhistory

Update on the Gatehouse Assessment!

Landmark Preservation 08.02.2021

This Thursday, we’re throwing back to the 19th century! Recognized as one of Atlanta’s oldest buildings, the one-story gatehouse dates to June 1890. The Roman...esque Revival building was designed by Walter T. Downing of Wheeling and Downing. The building is defined by its centralized tower, lead windows, and rough-hewn stone, which was quarried on site. Several additions occurred over the decades due to its evolving functions. These additions are most noticeable due to the change in hue on the exterior stone. In November 1935, M.W. Newbanks and Co. was hired to construct a single room office addition to each end of the gatehouse. These additions are referred to as Third Period construction. The gatehouse has been inoperable since 1975. Thank you for being a friend of Historic Westview Cemetery to ensure one of Atlanta’s treasures like this gatehouse continues telling its story. As we enter into a new month, we want to highlight the Westview entrance gate! (See what we did there? ) The current aluminum metal gate is not historic, or h...istorically appropriate, and sits just outside of the arch at the original cemetery entrance. Historically the entrance gate, presumably iron, sat within the entrance arch. As you can see from the historic postcard and photograph, the gates latched in the center and were decorative. Two pedestrian access entrances were on either side of the vehicular gate. As part of the Phase I rehabilitation, Landmark is recommending that the current gate be replaced with a custom, decorative iron gate based off the original as seen in historic postcard as much as possible. The new gate(s) would be placed in a new, historically appropriate location within the entrance arch. This would again allow pedestrian accessibility as historically appropriate. We are excited for the work Landmark will be doing and to one day walk through these restored gates with our families. Be a part of history and become a friend of Historic Westview Cemetery today! Originally constructed in 1920 as Western Heights Baptist Church, this large stone church structure is more commonly known today as St. Mark AME. St. Mark AME relocated to this building in 1948 after their original church was destroyed by a fire. It became one of the largest AME churches in Atlanta and hosted several Atlanta-North Georgia Annual Conferences in the sanctuary. After St. Mark AME relocated in 1976, the building has sat vacant but is still used for special even...ts if the weather allows. Landmark is currently working on a Designation Report to nominate this structure to the City of Atlanta Landmarks list. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #preservation #designation #preserveatl #preserveatlanta #historicpreservation #atlanta #churchhistory

The Historic Westview Cemetery Gatehouse was explored with Charles Bowen of the Friends of Historic Westview Cemetery, Greg Jacobs of Landmark Preservation, and... David Y. Mitchell of the Atlanta Preservation Center for a collaborative experience with Professor Cari Goetcheus of the University of Georgia College of Environment and Design to share with her students the on-going work on this exciting piece of history. A Conditions Assessment and Preservation Plan for the Gatehouse at Westview Cemetery is now being finalized with Landmark Preservation and the Friends of Historic Westview Cemetery. Thanks to your generous donations, we will soon start PHASE ONE with the rehabilitation and restoration of the North Wing interior. This is to include a welcome center in the Superintendent’s Office and unisex restrooms within the Third Period addition. This will also include a partial restoration of the exterior, including restoration of the entrance gate. __________ Many thanks to our growing body of donors who are making this preservation of history possible for future generations! The Ormewood Avenue Bridge was built from 1898-1899 along the Atlanta Beltline. It dominates the street scene due to its height and scale, and serves as a gateway between the historic residential neighborhoods of Ormewood Park and Grant Park. The bridge is also associated with significant advances in technology and methods of construction, specifically the use of cast in place concrete with steel reinforcement as building materials in a load bearing structural manner. Landm...ark is currently working on a Designation Report to nominate the Ormewood Avenue Bridge as the first structure listed as a City of Atlanta Landmark. #landmark #designation #railroadbridge #railroadhistory #atlanta #preservation #historicpreservation #preserveatl #ormewoodpark #grantpark #grantparkatl #preserveatlanta #preserveatlantahistory

Have you seen us in a lift at Monterey Square this week? Recent drone footage revealed that the Lady Liberty statue on top of the Pulaski Monument has severe cracking, as seen in these photos. We are currently in the process of assessment and testing to figure out what is causing the cracking. Once these questions are answered we will come up with a restoration and maintenance plan to get her much needed repairs. #historicpreservation #preservation #monument #monumentassessment #monumentpreservation #savannah #montereysquare #pulaskimonument

We recently completed an extensive conditions assessment for the fifty-seven monuments and fountains found in the City of Savannah. The overall goal is to preserve and maintain the monuments as they are a central part of the city’s landscape and are worth preserving. Deficiencies, extensive photographs documenting current deficiencies, the history of each monument (if found), recommended treatments, long term maintenance recommendations, as well as prioritization based on the level of work to be completed and budgets were provided for each monument. #preservation #historicpreservation #historicmonuments #historicfountains #culturallandscape #conditonsassessment #preservationplan #savannah #cityofsavannah
