A big THANK YOU to all who came out to see our lights this holiday weekend. We had some missteps on Thursday, but got them worked out by Friday night. We will... do it all again this coming weekend, December 4th, 5th and 6th. Unfortunately, we lost a couple of inflatables but will have some to replace them by the weekend. Come see us and please share your pictures with us on this page or the Little Ocmulgee State Park page. We would love to see them. Just a few rules and suggestions for seeing the Christmas lights at Little O: 1. Please follow the map below for viewing the displays. Traffic needs to flow to... the right to alleviate congestion and for safety concerns. 2. Parking in the large parking lot across from the campground and walking the path through the displays is the best option for those that can do so. Remember to wear something reflective so that drivers can see you as you are walking the roads. 3. Obey the speed limit through the park. The park limit is 5mph. Going slower through the displays is even better. 4. ***PLEASE WATCH FOR FOLKS WALKING*** 5. Remember to maintain social distancing between you and others enjoying the lights. 6. There are lights and a display located at the beach area, also. This is a new venture for us and we are learning as we go. Timers and blowups work well in perfect conditions. Weather and excess lights can cause malfunctions in both. We are trying to stay ahead of the problems but they catch us unaware sometimes. Come visit us and enjoy the volunteer work done by the Friends Chapter members to put a little sparkle and light in the park and 2020. Thank you to everyone that comes out to support us and our park. We are hoping that we will be able to do our lighted boardwalk next year and have Santa Claus again.

Good morning, Friends of LOSP! Welcome to another episode of Wildlife Wednesday. Today’s spotlight is on the state mammal of Georgia, the White-tailed Deer. ...White-tailed deer range throughout Georgia - from forests to coastal marshes. These beautiful deer have a reddish-brown coat in summer that turns grayish brown in winter. The white underside of the deer's tail is used to flash warnings and waves while deer run. They usually range in weight from 70 to 250 pounds in Georgia. An animal of incredible beauty and power, white-tailed deer can run up to 40 miles per hour, jump 9-foot fences, and swim 13 miles per hour. White-tailed deer are herbivores, munching on leaves, buds, twigs, and a wide variety of plants. They also eat acorns, fruits, mushrooms, and agricultural crops like alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. Bucks, male deer, will rub their antlers on small saplings to mark their territory. Many of these rubs can be seen near the trails at the park. Early hikers will often find the distinctive cloven hoof prints of deer on the trails also. The deer population at Little O is very prolific. They are often spotted crossing the road to the lodge, on the golf course, and in the woods along the road to the boat ramp/beach. Sometimes they wander into the campground! The wildlife viewing area across from the kiosk at the entrance to the park is a particularly good spot to catch site of these wary creatures. This photo was taken there by Friends of Little Ocmulgee State Park member George Combes at the end of August.

Good morning! It's Take a Hike Tuesday at Little O! Prickly Pear (or Devil's Tongue) grows along the trails of the park in well drained areas. These cacti fo...rm an open, low-growing mat of flattened stems, also called pads. The cactus spines are modified leaves. In spring the pads of eastern prickly pear stand upright but seem to deflate as winter approaches giving a stand of the cactus a withered, flat-growing appearance. Its flowers are yellow petals, often with orange-red throats, developing into pale magenta fruits by autumn. They can be the bane of dog paws, so keep your pets on the trail to avoid a painful experience for our furbuddies. The flowers are pretty though! Enjoy a day of social distancing and fresh air on the trails of Little Ocmulgee State Park. These cooler temperatures make hikes more enjoyable!

Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday! Today we are highlighting the raccoon. Little Ocmulgee State Park has a large population of raccoons. They are round, furry cre...atures with bushy tales and dark markings around their eyes. These markings are referred to as masks and are one of the reasons they are called bandits. They can grow to be as big as small dogs, up to 37 tall and weighing as much as 23lbs. Raccoons are omnivores, meaning they eat meat and vegetation. They are not above eating vegetables out of our gardens and trash from our trash bins. Their nimble, almost hand like paws are well suited for opening trash cans and tearing into packaging. They are nocturnal creatures and do their foraging at night as a rule. Campers need to be aware and make sure not to leave food outside. Although they are cute, raccoons can be quite ferocious. Never attempt to pet one. They are also known carriers of rabies. Usually daytime sightings of the masked bandits are a sign of a sick animal. However, mother raccoons with babies have been known to forage during the daytime hours. While visiting Little O, watch for these critters and perhaps get a photo of one or two. Be on the lookout for the albino raccoon that wanders the grounds of the park.

Good afternoon, Friends of LOSP! Today is Take a Hike Tuesday. We will share a picture that we have taken on the trails of Little O. If you have taken any, p...lease share one in the comments. There are many diverse ecosystems on the trails at the park. What is your favorite spot out there? We love every inch, but the boardwalk into the cypress swamp is definitely one of our favorites! Little Ocmulgee State Park 22.08.2019

We need everyone’s help in social distancing. If you choose to go outdoors, please consider staying close to your community and visiting a local park. Traveling longer distances to Georgia’s most well-known state parks is not recommended. However, this is a good time to explore our website and start planning future campouts, vacations, family reunions, fishing trips, golf retreats and other getaways. #walkinthepark #gawalkinthepark #traveltomorrow https://littleocmulgeelodge.com

During this difficult time, being in nature can be especially comforting. Per Gov. Brian Kemp’s Executive Order, outdoor activity is identified as an essential activity, as long as visitors follow CDC social-distancing guidelines. With over 1,300 acres of beautiful south Georgia wilderness including the Little Ocmulgee Lake, we believe Little Ocmulgee State Park can provide a much-needed refuge and remains open including trails, the golf course, campgrounds and the lake. Visitor centers, playgrounds and some other amenities are closed. For the latest details, visit GaStateParks.org/alerts.
