Sweet little Miss Polly came to see us at the beginning of the year for presumed neck pain. We performed an MRI which showed that Miss Polly had Chiari-like Malformation, along with Syringomyelia. This is where an abnormal growth of bone forms at the back of the skull, making the skull too small for the brain. This puts pressure on the brain (specifically, the Cerebellum) and affects the flow of spinal fluid from the brain. This condition is very common in King Charles Cavali...er Spaniels- 99% of them have CM to some degree, and about 50% of them have CM and Syringomyelia. However, not all become symptomatic. The most common clinical signs usually involve but are not limited to- scratching at the air (phantom scratching), unprovoked vocalizations, and neck pain. Miss Polly was put on medications to help with pain and decrease spinal fluid production and surgery to relieve the compression was planned for later in the year. Flash forward to now- Miss Polly had her surgery on Monday and got to go home today! She is already feeling so much better! We all loved having her as a patient- she is so sweet and got tons of cuddles! See more

Who doesn’t love some good puppy snuggles?! These cuties came in for their hearing certification before heading to their new homes. Some breeds are more prone to deafness, and Bull Terriers are one of those breeds. One of the services we provide here at LOVN is hearing certification/BAER testing. BAER stands for Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response. It is an electro-diagnostic test that evaluates the hearing of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals. With this test, we are able to follow the electrical signal produced by each patients inner ear and brain to demonstrate their ability to hear sounds. If you have a fur baby that you think may be deaf or a litter of puppies that you want to get checked, please give us a call and we would love to set that up for you!

Sweet Marlow came in for her re-check exam yesterday after her neck surgery a couple weeks ago and she is doing GREAT!!! She is her playful, energetic self again. It definitely put a smile on our faces to see how much better she is feeling. We are so glad we could get this sweet pup back on track to a normal, happy, active life!

Little Leto had back surgery last week and is on the road to recovery. She seemed to enjoy her Live Oak hoodie during her stay with us, and even got to take it home! We are looking forward to seeing her back in a few days for a recheck to see how her progress is going.

Live Oak Veterinary Neurology 30.08.2020

Everybody meet Marlow!!! She is a 5 month old Boykin Spaniel. This sweet girl jumped out of a car window a couple months ago which resulted in neck pain and weakness on her left side. Her MRI showed malformation of her atlanto-occipital joint (the joint between the base of the skull and beginning of the cervical spine) as well as displacement of the lamina of her first cervical vertebrae. The lamina is the plate of bone that forms the posterior walls of each vertebrae, enclos...ing the spinal cord. This caused significant compression on poor Marlow’s spinal cord, which is why she was having neck pain and deficits on her left side. Dr. King performed surgery on Marlow to relieve the compression. She is feeling so much better now and seems to be back to her normal, playful self. We are so happy she is feeling better and on the road to a full recovery! See more
