LMC’s very own Carol Senf will present TODAY in Cambridge University's Darwin College lecture series on a quite "bloody" topic: Abstract: Dracula, Blood, and the New Woman: Stoker’s Reflections on the Zeitgeist While Stoker’s Dracula has never been out of print since its publication in 1897, there’s a tendency either to inflate it as a study in the struggle between Good and Evil or to dismiss it as popular fiction. This talk addresses the degree to which Dracula wrestles wit...h the problems of its day, including the rise of the New Woman, which challenged traditional notions of gender relationships, and the importance of blood as a marker of identity. The New Woman, which Stoker will continue to address throughout his career, finally points to the future while blood demonstrates Stoker’s connection to a very traditional past. Bio: Carol Senf, Professor at Georgia Tech, specializes in Gothic Studies. She has written on Stoker, Dracula, Stephen King, LeFanu, Mary Shelley, the Brontes, Dickens, Eliot, Hardy, and Sarah Grand. Her most recent book (co-authored with Sherry Brown and Ellen Stockstill) is A Research Guide to Gothic Literature in English (2018).

NATALIE DIAZ & CHIOMA URAMA, FEBRUARY 11 I hope you and yours are all well and thriving this far into the new year. Ilya and I are excited to welcome you, your students, friends and families to Poetry@Tech’s Spring 2021 series of readings, and we couldn’t be more excited about the line-up. Since we still can’t all come together in the Kress Auditorium, all of our spring events will continue to be virtual. ... We hope you’ll join us from the comfort of your living room couch or wherever you are this coming Thursday evening at 7pm as we partner with the University of Georgia Press, and the Atlanta Global Studies Center to welcome MacAuthur Fellow NATALIE DIAZ, and the 2019 winner of the UGA Press Georgia Poetry Prize, CHIOMA URAMA. We’ll be celebrating the release of Chioma’s new book. Our virtual doors will open at 6:45pm, and the event will begin at 7:00pm. And as always, this and every Poetry@Tech event is free and open to everyone. For more information about the event, or NATALIE DIAZ and CHIOMA URAMA, click on https://poetry.gatech.edu/events. Looking forward to seeing you on February 11, 2021. If you have any questions at all, or would just like to be in touch, let me know. You can always reach me at this email address.
