Robotics training is equipping millwrights in the Southern District with in-demand skills. Robot stations at the Charlotte, North Carolina, and Arlington, Texas..., training centers are preparing millwrights to work in the automotive industry and in other manufacturing facilities that increasingly use automated systems. The governors of Alabama, Mississippi, and Iowa have joined leaders of Arkansas, South Carolina, and Montana in announcing they will end participation in a fede...ral unemployment program that gives workers an additional $300 per week. This affects millwrights because our jobs are often temporary, and we typically receive unemployment benefits between projects. The governors who are ending the extra payments argue the additional income is discouraging people from looking for work. But research does not back this claim. Studies have shown that many people receiving extra benefits return to work before the benefits expire and people receiving generous benefits find jobs at a higher rate than others. President Biden reiterated yesterday that existing laws require those receiving unemployment benefits to search for work and accept suitable jobs. Millwrights are part of a high-demand, high-stress industry. One in three construction-industry workers suffers from anxiety, depression, and unmanageable stres...s each year. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the SSMRC is teaming up with Domain Wellness Partners to provide information, tips and guidance to help members stay strong mentally and live more satisfying and fulfilling lives. The framework for the information and resources we’ll offer will be a set of mental-wellness domains. Here’s why: Millwrights love what we do, but sometimes to the detriment of our overall mental well-being. When we spend all our time and effort focused on work, it is easy to neglect the other areas of our lives. Over time, this creates an unhealthy balance, and we lose sight of other things and people that are important to us. An unhealthy balance leads to anxiety and depression. We can prevent this from happening by understanding what is important to us in all areas of our lives and then taking action in those areas. Our lives are made up of specific, connected areas or domains that are all important, to some degree, to our quality of life. If we are satisfied in our domains, we have a high quality of life. When we have a high quality of life, we have good mental health.
