We would like to acknowledge the collective grief and pain resulting from the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and George Floyd o...nly a few of the countless, tragic deaths resulting from racism. We are thinking of our members and the ways that their grief experiences are further impacted by threats to their sense of safety and security. We know hearing about or watching acts of violence can trigger grief and trauma responses. For years, we have worked to become experts in talking with children and teens about grief and loss. We are not experts in talking about racism and oppression, but we know we cannot disentangle grief from the daily experiences of racism faced by Black/African-American people and other people of color. In our Kate’s Club song, we end by saying we come together as one. Our Kate’s Club community is built on empathy, and these recent events highlight our continuous need for more empathy. Together as one, we must seek understanding and discuss how we can make a difference. Today, we want you to know that we come together as one to see you, hear you, and hold space for you. This message is not a one-time statement, but an initial pledge to better support our community.
