Low Country Preservation 28.11.2020

An article in The Brunswick News on April 30, 1984. In the picture the public is lined up outside to see the newly renovated Dart house. The article mentions ma...ny, many contributions from the public for the renovation of this historic house. "The refurbishing of the structure was not only a renovation to accommodate the chamber's special needs, but as much as possible, a restoration which paid attention to Victorian details." "Conserving the character of the house was important" "There are probably over $50,000 of in-kind contributions. We got $160-165,000 worth of work when $110,000 was expended by the chamber for restoration/renovation."

Letter to the Editor of the Brunswick News by Casey Dart Igel Dart House defines origins 2/5/2014 In 1983, the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce purcha...sed the Dart House and property from my family. It was sold with the understanding the Chamber would act as a steward to honor, protect and preserve the house for future generations. The Chamber's 1984 Dedication Ceremony Program proclaimed, "the restoration now complete, the home has regained its historic prominence as a Glynn County landmark." Now, with the Chamber outgrowing the space, this landmark's fate is in danger. Brunswick has lost many of its historic treasures through the years including the jewel of Brunswick, the Oglethorpe Hotel. Once a historic structure is removed, it takes with it a portion of the story of our heritage, our community, ourselves. Now, there is another significant historic structure that is potentially in peril of being destroyed. The house, at its current location is an architectural beacon for Brunswick. It creates a sense of place that defines Brunswick's origins, not just for my family but the entire community. It's the last Dart parcel remaining with the structure intact, built by my great-great-grandfather, William Robert Dart, son of a founder of the City of Brunswick, Urbanus Dart. Which path will the Chamber choose? Herald the Dart House as a Brunswick landmark in the gateway where it can promote cultural heritage to benefit future generations? Or replace a 137 year-old landmark with an office building? I hope the community and Chamber can work together to find a solution. Casey Dart Igel St. Simons Island See more
