Story time! The other week, my 5th grade kid had a project due. This project included a one page paper on Martin Luther King Jr. and an art component for which she was to decorate a shoe box in the fashion of a parade float. She’d had about two weeks to complete the assignment and was down to the night before. Sound familiar? Anyway, she seemed stressed about it, but I was underwhelmed. In my mind, this should have taken her an hourtwo max. But then, she is 10. So, I did ...the mommy thing. I went into her room and told her she could do it. Then I gave her an outline (the old and trusty 5 sentence/5 paragraph method) and told her to go forth and conquer. Know what happened after the pep talk and outline? She freaked out! My highly intelligent, artsy kid descended into tears and arguing and told me that she had no idea what she was supposed to do with the outline and that I had overwhelmed her. I’m not gonna lieI was offended. How in the heck could encouraging words and a play-by-play equal overwhelm?! I realized then that there was nothing I could dobeyond sitting with her and telling her EXACTLY what to dowhich I was NOT going to do. She had to make the choice to slow down and take it one step at a time. The outcome? She was not done by bedtime, but I made her go to bed even though she cried for the next hour. But sleep always helps. And she finished at school the next day, just before the class where the project was due. And this means SHE COULD HAVE FINISHED IN THE SIX HOURS SHE HAD THE NIGHT BEFORE! The block was entirely mental! The crazy part is that even adults do this! We let hang-ups about our writing abilities kill our motivation to get it done. CONFIDENCE IS EVERYTHING and your ability to calm yourself in stressful moments can be the difference between getting it done and having a meltdown. You have the skills! You’ve got this.
