The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black history had the pleasure to meet The Even Par Golf Club from Atlanta in Augusta this past weekend. They came to the Laney Museum for a tour, played golf at The Patch, and met "The Black Caddies" of The Augusta National. They had never heard of Miss Lucy Craft Laney, The Patch, or The Black Caddies until they saw the documentary on The Golf Channel during The Masters in November. They had a great visit and will be back soon. #lucycraftlaneymuseumofblackhistory #loveaugusta #theblackcaddies #blackhistory #augustablackhistory

Golden Blocks Project is a project spearheaded by the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History and the Greater Augusta Arts Council. Named the Golden Blocks Project, in reference to the historic nickname of the corridor of business and industry located on or near Campbell and Gwinnett Streets, this endeavor will create new public art that references the historical and cultural significance of these areas. Today, Campbell and Gwinnett Streets are James Brown and Laney-Walker B...oulevards.During the time of segregation, the area nicknamed the Golden Blocks was the heart of Augusta's black business community. Federal "Red Line" policies prevented citizens from receiving bank mortgages within certain areas that were predominantly non-white populations, and businesses elsewhere in the city were allowed to discriminate against black patrons due to Jim Crow era laws. In the Laney Walker and Bethlehem neighborhoods, black-owned banks, insurance companies, theaters and other businesses worked to offset this discrimination and thrived, creating a strong sense of community. Lucy Craft Laney: Birth of an American Hero Miss Lucy Craft Laney was born in Macon, Georgia on April 13, 1854, eleven years before slavery ended. She was the seventh of ten children born to Rev. and Mrs. David Laney. Rev. Laney was a noteworthy Presbyterian minister and an outstanding carpenter. Using the money he saved doing side jobs, Mr. Laney was able to purchase his wife's freedom and promise his children a better life. Although there were laws that prohibited blacks fr...om reading during Miss Laney's time, with the help of Ms. Campbell, the slave owner's sister, Lucy was able to read by the time she was four. Ms. Campbell's generosity and her parent's open-arm policy with strangers and family taught Lucy the importance of giving and sharing. These lessons would be the foundation for her success. In 1869 at the age of 15, Lucy entered the first class of Atlanta University. In 1873, she was graduated with three other students and went on to start a teaching career that would change the lives of an entire community of people and influence the nation.
