Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic and to promote the safety of our staff and clients while still being available when needed for your animals as they are considered essential to us we are limiting the appointments we are seeing currently. Our office will be open 8am-12pm Monday through Saturday throughout April for appointments to be scheduled and medications to be filled. We will be postponing routine visits and surgeries until May unless it is puppy/kitten vaccines to prevent sickness. After 12pm we will always have a doctor available for sick animals and emergencies so do not hesitate to call us when you need us! If we don’t answer we will call you back! Thank you for your understanding during this time. -Doctors and Staff at MMVS

Meet Arrow! Arrow is a 1-2 year old male domestic short hair cat with quite a story! He was brought in by a client of ours who found him with an arrow sticking out of his abdomen -- due to the extensive treatment required he was signed over to the clinic to be treated. He was immediately taken to surgery to remove the arrow where we found it had punctured his left kidney, but luckily no other organs were damaged. Due to the damage caused by the arrow the decision was made to ...remove his kidney -- this is not a surgery typically done in general practice so we were pretty excited and he is doing great! He is a sweet boy who seems unaware that just days ago he was shot! He is a lover and would make a great addition to any family! Cats can live just fine with one kidney, but he will need to have bloodwork monitored every couple of years as he gets older to ensure that his one kidney continues to function well. He would likely do better as an indoor cat as he is quite personable. He will be available for adoption once he is neutered and vaccinated. There is a $50 adoption fee. If you are interested in Arrow or would like more information you can email or call the clinic: [email protected] 706-789-2232 https://maggiesmenagerievet.net

6 Month Equine Event Permit update: As of July 1, 2019, the state has suspended the 6 month Equine Event Permit program that was free of charge. They have partnered with Global Vet Link to continue to offer the Extended Equine Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (EECVI) as the replacement program. It requires an online account accessible from a computer and an app that can be downloaded to a smartphone. We are happy to help everyone get set up with Global Vet Link and guid...e you through this new process. Please call the clinic if you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment. We cannot stress enough how important it is to spay your animals...this sweet girl is a 10 year old lab that had emergency surgery on Friday due to pyometra making her very sick luckily she came through surgery just fine! A Pyometra is a severe uterine infection that is life threatening because in many instances the cervix is closed meaning that all the pus in the uterus has nowhere to go. Even when the cervix is open allowing some drainage it makes them very sick prevent this terrible situation by spaying your pets! For perspective a spay runs between $150-175 whereas the emergency surgery runs between $600-800 in addition to your very sick pet.

As summer heat is just getting started, it’s important to realize how hot it gets in vehicles. Even if the windows are cracked open, there’s still not enough airflow to give relief. Windows have to be down a large amount, or the AC on, or simply leave your pet at home if you know you’ll be a while inside of a store. It’s better for them to be safe! Happy summer!!

Maggie's Menagerie Veterinary Services 15.06.2019

Did anyone else cry from laughter, or was that just me?

Maggie's Menagerie Veterinary Services 10.06.2019

As we turn towards summer, that means bugs are about! Not only is it fleas and ticks that are nuisances and disease vectors, but did you know that mosquitoes are also dangerous for your pets? Dogs and cats, regardless if they are predominately indoor (bugs still find a way in!), are at risk for heart worm disease if left untreated. All it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito for your dog or cat to get heart worms. These long, white worms live in your pet's bloodstream... gradually congest an animal's heart and can result in death. It affects the heart's ability to pump blood appropriately and/or can totally clog a major artery. Pets left untreated can suddenly die after intense exercise, or over time, can develop symptoms such as shortness of breath/coughing, lack of stamina, fainting or disorientation after exercise, and in more severe cases, congestive heart failure. During your pet's annual check up, it is highly recommended that a heart worm check is performed, even if your pet is on monthly preventative, to ensure the preventative measures are working appropriately. Once a yearly heart worm check is performed and they are negative for heart worms, we also highly recommend your pet being on a product like Heartgard or Interceptor, which prevents heart worms and intestinal parasites. Trifexis is another fantastic option that treats fleas, as well as heart worms and intestinal parasites. If your dog is heart worm positive, there is an option for treatment, albeit expensive. They would need to be kept very calm and leash walked for several months, as pieces of the worms will begin to die off. If your pet is overly stimulated, this could clog major arteries/could cause cardiac arrest due to an increased heart rate and blood flow. It is much more cost effective to place your dog on a monthly preventative than it is to treat heart worm disease. Even if your dog had heart worms once, they can absolutely get them again. Feel free to give us a call to set up an appointment to make sure your pet is in peak health!
