We’re pleased to show you a little bit of the rearranging we’ve done since the holidays! In this grouping, the large painting on the right and the six smaller ones on the left are by Holly Schlater. Between them are a vertical row of paper mache figures by Carol Roll. Far left, a bird tree by Lonnie and Twyla Money. The artful pillows (imported from India) and wooden flowers (handmade by a Michigan couple) are just a sampling of the attractive decor items we offer. Come war...m up and explore all three floors of Main Street Gallery! We’re open Fridays and Saturdays, 11am-5pm, and by appointment. Check out our recently relaunched website (linked in Comments) 24/7; now you can purchase from it at your convenience. This (top photo, from Visit Clayton) was the quiet scene last Sunday in Clayton’s historic downtown. You can see Main Street Gallery’s storefront behind the street light on the left. Our owner, Jeanne, shot the bottom photo from one of those upstairs windows. It snowed for two days straight and disrupted neighboring businesses for even more days. But when you live in North Georgia, snow happens. Downtown Clayton has been our place of business for 35 years, and we consider it... our good fortune to be here in any weather! Visit soon if you can: Main Street Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11am-5pm, and by appointment. If the forecast is to be trusted, last weekend's snow in Northeast Georgia might not be all the white stuff we'll be seeing. That turns our thoughts to staying warm -- and blankets and quilts. This quilt from the late Alabama artist Chris Clark would be better providing warm thoughts from a nice place on the wall instead of making the bed more toasty, and that’s just fine! Chris, a gentle fellow who died way too young at age 52 in 2011, was taught by his grandmother to piece ...and stitch in 1991, and soon he was making quilts upon which he would paint scenes. As this available 41 inch-by-35-inch quilt suggests, Chris loved music. Let us know if it sings to you. Main Street Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11am-5pm, and by appointment. This was the peaceful scene this morning in beautiful downtown Clayton, captured by Ronnie Pettit at Local Exposure Magazine and originally posted by our down-the-street neighbors, Wander North Georgia. You can’t see Main Street’s storefront in this image; we’re too far down the block on the right before the traffic light. But trust us, we’re not there. We’re hunkered down and recharging for when we’ll be open again! Main Street Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11am-5...pm, and by appointment. Here’s a great snow day idea: Check out our recently relaunched website (linked in Comments) 24/7; now you can purchase from it at your convenience. Charlie Lucas, one of the artists that Main Street Gallery has proudly represented for many years, was recently profiled in a Washington Post story, headlined "The Abstract Artistic Vision of Charlie Lucas: How a self-taught painter and sculptor in Alabama has created an enduring legacy using found objects." This nice passage in the story tells how Charlie, who devoted his life to making art at 34 and is now 70, developed his form of expression: "He uses found objects to mak...e his work, items that others may overlook. Lucas cites his great-grandfather, a blacksmith named Cane Jackson, and his ancestors in Africa as influences. Before they were enslaved, he surmises they might’ve been tinkerers, witch doctors or what he calls ‘fire guardists’: artisans who used fire to turn precious metals into jewelry, weapons and tools. Jackson showed Lucas how to work metal; as a child, Lucas visited the local dump with his grandmother, who secured a rope around his waist and taught him to dumpster-dive. African Americans have always done more with less, Lucas says, and he’s honoring the pieces of culture passed down to him." Our owner Jeanne Kronsnoble recently visited Charlie in Alabama and brought back these pieces that are currently available. You can find more details on Charlie's page on our recently relaunched website, linked in Comments. No matter where you stand on the issue of climate change, if it were to rain 40 days and 40 nights, you’d probably appreciate having some great folk art to look at to take your mind off all that precip and basement flooding. May we suggest this charming Noah’s Ark by the late Northeast Georgia folk artist Tubby Brown? The mixed media ark is 22 inches long by 13 inches high, counting the cute rooster and hen up top. Main Street Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11am-5pm, and by appointment. Check out the Finds page on our recently relaunched website (linked in Comments) for this and other great vintage folk art; now you can purchase directly from the website at your convenience. Today and Friday are our first days welcoming customers to the gallery in the New Year, and we’re excited to be back! Note to self: Write 2022, not 2021, on receipts and checks. It’s cold in Clayton, but sunny skies are predicted, so no snow as in Amy Payne’s sweet painting Snow Day. We have some great North Georgia memory paintings by Amy. Come see them (and warm up!) In the gallery, or check them out on our website from which you can purchase at your convenience, with ...shipping included linked in Comments. We love when customers send us photographs of artwork purchased at Main Street Gallery that they’ve newly installed in their homes. Pieces that we enjoy seeing in the gallery here in Clayton always take on a new life enhancing their new homes. For instance, David Calhoun sent us this picture of a special spot for a large (46 x 70 inches) Theresa Disney floral, Jocasta. Looks fabulous the way the painting interacts with the three-dimensional objects immediately below it. Wh...en we shared our positive feedback, David sent a photo of the Disney floral in the bedroom, proving once again that the only thing better than a new beautiful painting is two! We’re happy to help you find a perfect art fit for a spot you have in mind for your nest. Bring (or send us) a photo of the space you have in mind. Outsider Art Fair continues through this weekend in New York, and Milwaukee artist Della Wells, who we have long represented, continues to draw serious media interest. In addition to having a photo included in an Outsider story on Harper's Bazaar's website, which we posted about earlier this week, Della has had just had images of her collages included in Fair coverage on Forbes' website (linked in Comments) and on Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art's site (linked immediate...ly below). No wonder our phone has been ringing and ringing with questions about available works by Della this week! The Whitehot Magazine roundup of "25 Outstanding Works from Outsider" also includes coverage of the late Purvis Young. Both artists were in a Main Street Gallery exhibit this past summer, and we still have strong examples of Purvis' paintings available. See links to Della's and Purvis' website pages below in Comments. Main Street Gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays, 11:30am-4:30pm, and by appointment. We’re excited to share that Della Wells received some wonderful exposure on Harper's Bazaar‘s website. One of Della’s masterful collages was included in a report on the Outsider Art Fair in New York, linked immediately below. Main Street Gallery has a nice selection on Della’s collages currently on our website, which is linked in Comments. We are open 11:30am-4:30pm Fridays and Saturdays (or by appointment), so come see them in person, which is even better! Last weekend, we were happy to have a visit by Gail, a frequent Main Street Gallery customer from Habersham County, who selected this woodpecker carving on driftwood by Lonnie and Twyla Money. She was looking for folk art for her guest house, and woodpeckers are regular visitors to her birdfeeders, so it seemed a natural match. Gail loved the contrast of the red, white and black colors, and the shiny surface of the birds mixed with the natural driftwood base. Finally, she app...reciated the idea of wall art that is 3-D rather than 2-D for the spot where the sculptural piece will hang. I will enjoy it and I know my guests will as well, Gail said. Find more works by Kentucky wood carvers Lonnie and Twyla Money on our website, linked below in Comments. Come see us when we are open again on Friday and Saturday, 11:30am-4:30pm, or by appointment. It's Saturday, we're open in downtown Clayton, and thinking about trees! Why are we pondering trees when they’re in virtual hibernation in late January? Well, it came to our attention that the Jewish holiday of Tu BiShvat -- celebrating "the New Year of the Trees" -- was observed this week. It got us looking at the varied way Main Street Gallery painters depict trees. So we’re sharing examples here by Diane Elmeer (top left), Danette Sperry (top right) Jeffrey Kronsnoble (from bottom left), Amy Payne, Dorethey Gorham, Alyne Harris, Frankie Scarborough, Jay Schuette and Holly Schlater. Main Street Gallery is open 11:30am-4:30pm Fridays and Saturdays, and by appointment. Our website, linked below in Comments, is open 24/7. Everyone, it seems, was wowed by that full Wolf Moon last night, so we thought we’d celebrate it with more winter moon glow in our post today. This is Ed McGrath’s Nighttime Skating (16 x 20, acrylic on canvas). A longtime Georgian, Ed hasn’t been a New Englander for many a moon, but he recalls the details of life there brilliantly! We are open Fridays and Saturdays, 11:30am-4:30pm, and by appointment. Our art-filled website, linked below in Comments, is open 24/7.
