With an overall drop for museums due to Covid-19 (travelers are not traveling!), it was nice to see an article to that effect. And, good to remind the public that museums are still out there, all needing your support. Check out this article Grateful for Museums. I had no idea that the loss of revenue was so high. Please continue to remember all of the museums and if you can’t visit, consider making purchases from the online gift shops. https://mailchi.mp/plimoth/were-thinking-of-you-269133

We lost someone very special to our museum yesterday. Olivia de Havilland, who portrayed Melanie Hamilton Wilkes in Gone With the Wind, passed away in Paris, at the age of 104. While I never had the pleasure of meeting Ms. de Havilland, I did correspond with her, and will always cherish the beautifully written letters on blue stationary, with matching envelopes and Parisian postage stamps, that she sent to me. In 2009, for our 70th anniversary special event, I sent a lett...Continue reading

Oh, Rhett! It’s time to go to Kroger for toilet paper. If they don’t have any, where shall we go, what shall we do? Frankly, my dear! I guess it’s Publix.

Today’s dress is what we refer to as the Peachtree Street Dress. This unusual dress features an apron styled overlay, with a pink skirt underneath. I’m sure the experts can tell us all about it, and whether is was a dress, or a skirt and blouse. The bell sleeves definitely make a statement, but somehow, I like them. I believe Scarlett wore a large brimmed hat with this outfit, and it was also striking. One of our windies, Selina Faye Bell, made a reproduction of this dre...ss and she looked stunning in it. I’ve attached the Walter Plunkett sketch, Scarlett wearing it from a scene in the movie, and a photo of the Hallmark Ornament that was released wearing the dress. So, what do you guys think of this particular dress? And, you too, experts! See you next week! See more

Scarlett O’Hara Fashion Show Dress of the Week! The Shanty Town dress is one with an interesting past (which I will leave for our professionals to weigh in on). For me, the style of the dress shows the two sides of Scarlett. The look of the dress, with its long sleeves with white cuffs, full skirt, and plain fabric, seem almost too simplistic for wild-child Scarlett. Perhaps that’s why Walter Plunkett added the unique design work, as it takes away any plainness by drawing ...the eye directly to it. That, and to the fairly low neckline leading to the matching buttons, which gave the dress a very sensual feel. The hat with the feather, told us that Scarlett meant business as she made her way to Shanty Town, where she almost met with disaster, if not for Big Sam. Looking forward to your thoughts about this beautifully crafted dress, which is too often overlooked as one of Plunkett’s GWTW creations. Photos: Scarlett after the attack, Plunkett’s sketch of the dress, and a closeup to show detail of the design. See more

This week, we take a look at some of Scarlett O'Hara's most iconic looks from the movie! (If you've been paying attention on Tuesday's, you've seen a few of these up close & personal during our Scarlett O'Hara fashion show!)

Scarlett O’Hara Fashion Show Dress of the Week! Today’s dress is one of the most recognized dresses in Gone With the Wind, yet it was not worn by Vivien Leigh in the movie. We only see the beautiful Portrait Dress in the massive painting of Scarlett, as it hangs above the giant fireplace in the Butler home. Made of deep blue velvet fabric, the dress has a train and capped tufted sleeves, and is adorned with a white shawl that hangs more than halfway down the skirt of the dr...ess. The reproduction on display in our museum is quite heavy (believe me, I’ve dressed the form and I know first-hand!). It is so beautiful and elegant and could not have been a better choice for Scarlett’s breathtaking portrait. For those who may not know, the original portrait (the one at which Rhett threw his drink), hangs in the Margaret Mitchell House Museum and is well worth a visit to see. Let’s see what our 3 experts (Joseph Clinton, Mike Goodson, and Joe Yakovetic) have to say about this week’s pic. And, please come out to the museum to see our replica if you haven’t already visited. Scarlett O’Hara Fashion Show Dress of the Week! This week we look at the Bookkeeper’s Dress (Joe Yakovetic may have given you a sneak peek), but that’s okay. It’s worth a second look! Costumer Joseph Clinton made this reproduction, to bring to last year’s 80th anniversary event. Just before leaving that Sunday, he surprised me with his donation of it to the museum. The Bookkeeper’s Dress is one of the few styles that gave us a different look at Scarlett. She was all business when she wore this dress, but hopefully, Joseph will describe how he came to make this dress, and all the particulars about the process. There are two photos of Scarlett wearing the dress, and ours courtesy of Joseph. Thanks to all for following our Scarlett O’Hara Fashion Show. Stay tuned each Tuesday for a new one!
