Last year, nearly 70% of Americans made a money-related New Year’s resolution, and more than half of them are prioritizing saving more, according to Fidelity Investments’ 2020 New Year Financial Resolutions study. As well-meaning as we all maybe, some of us achieve the goals we set at the beginning of the year, and some of us don't. If you are one of those who fell short, we may have an idea on why. The goals we set for ourselves are often too vague to keep us on track. Inst...ead of just wanting to change, we find change actually comes when you plan for it. Use the link below to make a plan so you can actually accomplish two of the most popular financial resolutions for 2021. https://mjcpa.activehosted.com/index.php Don't miss out on any of our PPP information. Mauldin & Jenkins recognizes and values the milestones in which African Americans have made not only within the accounting industry but the world as a whole. February is the month we celebrate these accomplishments and praise those who have made a difference. African Americans are largely underrepresented in the accounting industry only making up around 9% of accountants. However, 62.2% of African Americans within the accounting industry are women. With this in mind, we high...light three African American women that were pioneers of our profession and opened the doors of inclusiveness for all. Theodora Rutherford was the first African American woman to graduate with a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Columbia University in 1924. Rutherford was not able to use her accounting degree until 1958; 34 years after she obtained it. However, Rutherford was able to become the first African American woman CPA in West Virginia and the first African American woman member of the West Virginia Society of Public Accountants after a rule change in the late 1950s. Mary Thelma Washington started her accounting firm out of her basement in 1939. In 1943 she became the first African American woman CPA. She started as an assistant for Arthur J. Wilson, the second African American CPA in the United States, at Binga State Bank of Chicago, one of the country’s largest African American-owned banks. She was only the 13th African American to enter accounting and her firm eventually grew into one of the largest African American-owned CPA firms in the United States. Dr. Larzette Hale-Wilson was the first African American woman CPA in the state of Georgia. Dr. Wilson was also the first African American woman to earn her Ph.D. in accounting. She started her firm in 1955, and during her career, she served as Chair of the Supervisory Committee of the Utah State University Credit Union in 1974, the 17th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Inc, and headed the School of Accountancy at Utah State University. During Black History Month, we encourage you to learn more about the impressive impacts these individuals and all African American accounting professionals have made on our profession.
