"As one of Georgia Power’s top environmental lobbyists, Berry had a clear mission on that rainy day in April 2019: Convince those five energy regulators that the company’s customers should foot the bill for one of the most expensive toxic waste cleanup efforts in state history." #SaveJULIETTE

Juliette, in the news. Sams says, "We know that closure by removal, removing the ash, and putting it in a lined landfill is the safest way to close these ponds. Ratepayers are going to pay a large portion of the costs to close the ponds. When you are talking about costs, why would you spend millions of dollars to close one of these ash ponds the wrong way with ratepayer money? Why are we not doing to best closure method and saving money in the long run by doing it right the first time?"

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has impacted all of us in many ways. This time last year, we had just begun to raise awareness on the coal ash issue surrounding Plant Scherer in Juliette. Because of the circumstances, everything essentially stopped. The County Water Project has started. That was a big win for us! We are still fighting for coal ash excavation and Georgia Powers current permit request to EPD on the ash pond closure plans. The water stations that have been provided by MCES have helped provide access to clean water for residents in the affected areas. We are thankful for our County leadership and those who made this possible. The two locations where you may still access clean water after 2/8, the fire station in downtown Juliette and Maynard Baptist Church on Juliette Road. New things are coming soon. Continue to stay safe!

A Monroe County native, Maggie Parlier who is away at college majoring in Environmental Health Science, is currently in a water treatment class and has a project concerning big water issues. We are so fortunate she has chosen to write about the current water issues surrounding Plant Scherer. If you would like to speak with her on how this has affected you or your family, please comment below. This is another big opportunity to share our story. Your participation is appreciated!
