My story isn’t a traumatic one or one of loss, it’s why I became vegan. About nine years ago I started waking up with stiff joints, mostly my hands. I thought,... dayum, I’m not even 50 and I’m falling apart. The stiffness worsened as the months passed. So bad that I had to stop working out because I was in so much pain. It was suggested to me to go see a RA dr. To my surprise after 9 viles of blood were drawn my diagnosis was Lupus. I was dumbfounded. I went home with a prescription for steroids to share the news with my better half, my husband. I was in so much pain that I was willing to take the steroids even though I knew how bad they were for me. My husband, who has always been vegetarian suggested I go raw vegan. Raw vegan, really?! Well I did. Within 3-4 days I started to feel a difference. It was becoming easier to do daily tasks that we take for granted, like brushing my teeth. I was raw for about 6 weeks, then raw until 5pm for about another month or so. During that time I educated myself about Lupus, an auto immune disease. Everything I read was telling me that my animal consumption was contributing to my illness. All this happened in September of one year. Six months later I went to a lupus specialist in Boston who drew another 9 viles of blood. A couple of days later my heart froze as I saw a call from the Boston dr. He said he was happy to inform me that I DID NOT have lupus!! What, no Lupus?!?! I mentioned to him that my medical records from the Atlanta dr said that I did have Lupus. Well, he said, you are showing no markers for lupus! I cannot express the relief I felt and gratitude for my husband’s suggestion and support, he went vegan to support me. 9 years ago my veganism journey started because of my health. Now I’m vegan for the animals, mama earth and my health.

A more complete reaction to my earlier post about the popularity of yoga and intoxicants... Letter to a young yogi... Dear Sweet Yogi,... I know you may have come here at first to grow stronger, or more limber, to balance a strenuous exercise regimen or to accompany a friend who has been pestering you to try something new. There are a million reasons people begin yoga. And I assure you, the practice we will do will answer all of those needs, but it will do something much much more if you let it. It will invite you to FEELfirst in the body, but eventually in the heart. The shapes and movement you create with your physical being will open channels of energy that may have been blocked for a long time. The elimination of outer distractions may lead you to revisit old memories, powerful emotions, spiritual hungers that you haven’t looked at for years, and this may be the most challenging part of yoga for you, as it is for many others. You will likely be tempted to quiet all of that FEELING. You might even find classes that will give you a means to do just thatwith wine, or beer, or food, or any number of other distractions. You can numb if you want. Your egothat part of you that is made up of all of the old stories and patterns and beliefs that you THINK are you right now, will want you to go back to being numb. Your limited sense of self never wants to be challenged, or changed, or, heaven forbid, shattered. But I beg you, dear seeker. Resist the urge to numb. Instead, sit in silence and get acquainted with your SELFin a new way. Those pesky feelings that show up are there to heal you, to guide you, and to teach you a wisdom that has been with you all along. Please, oh please, LISTEN to the inner voice that is guiding you home to the infinite cathedral of your heart. There you will find a bliss that no temporary numbness or partying can ever rival. You won’t ever need the old crutches when you have learned to fly. And learn to fly, you will, if you trust that the practice is enough.
