Detroit Mission

God has given me a passion for Detroit, MI about 2 years ago. This past September, Matthew and I raised a little money and went on a trip up there to see for ourselves how things looked, reach out to the homeless, and to take a tour of the city and the missionaries already there with the North American Mission Board. It was very enlightening, and while there, we met a pastor named Jon Jackson who is leading people to do the same type of mission work that I was looking to do. ...He is working on cleaning up the city of debris, overgrown yards, and other aesthetic aspects. He is assisting the homeless in get housing, feeding those in need, and rescuing those in abusive situations. I would like to return to Detroit this coming March to assist him and his church with their Easter food drive and community outreach. I know Easter is a special time for celebration with our families with Easter egg hunts, family gatherings, pretty new clothes, and high church attendance, but think about those without families to gather with and who do not have food to eat or even a roof over their head this Easter. Detroit is the number 1 most impoverished city in the United States. We as Christians have to put our actions where our theology tells us we should be. Deuteronomy 15:11 says For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.' I know being away from family is a sacrifice, and being away from family during Easter weekend is an even greater sacrifice, but Hebrews 13:16 says, And don't forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God. This is also a family friendly mission trip; children are welcome. Jon has his children involved in most of what he does. I am not looking for commitment to the trip, but I do ask everyone to pray about this and consider this opportunity to help spread God's love. Please let me know if you are at all interested. I am looking for people who would be willing to travel with me on a mission trip to Detroit around Easter '16. It would be preparing for a large Easter event as well as maybe going door to door to spread the word about the food drive.

I was wondering who MIGHT be interested in being a part of a mission trip to Detroit in late March of next year. I am not looking for any commitments. I simply would like to know if you will be willing to consider it.

I just wanted to give an update. I do not have a specific date in mind, but I would like to see who might be interested in a spring mission trip. I made many good contacts last time I was there and would like to make another trip up there but as a group this time. I am not looking for commitment, just interest.

I just want to thank everyone for their support. The prayers, items, money, and support back home. We met many people, made some great contacts, met some of the people who call the streets their home, and gathered a lot of information and visuals on the actual physical situation in the city.

We took the remainder of our things that we were unable to give out yesterday to the covenant house this afternoon.

After we eat we are going to try and visit a childrens shelter.

We are learning that socks, hats, blankets, and back packs are things that were high in demand. Scarves were rarely accepted.

Just encountered lots of gentlemen and was able to give out many many items. The gratitude was heart warming.

We have made it to Detroit and are checked into the hotel. In the short time we have been here, we have already been approached by two people.
