Congratulations to our director, Nick Marzo, for being nominated for the coveted Aasect DEI (Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion) Award! The official awards ceremony will be held this upcoming June during the annual AASECT conference. Recognizing there was a lack of diverse representation within the organization and accessible resources for sex therapists working with gender-diverse people, Nick petitioned for and now spearheads a Special Interests Group for Gender Diverse S...exuality Professionals within AASECT (which is the first of its kind). In addition to the work Nick does as a therapist, supervisor, and community activist, he also created an affirming, lived-experience-focused, and accessible on-demand Continuing Education platform for therapists and professionals who want to work with individuals who identify as part of the gender, sexuality, or relationship structure minority. Zanele Muholi (they/them) is a South African visual activist whose work primarily features the Black LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with Out from 2019, Muholi discusses how specific terms for concepts like queerness and gender nonconformity don't exist in the Zulu language. I identify as a human being at this stage because of gender fluidity, and to avoid being confused by what the society expects out of us, they say. I came out as a same-gender loving person, but beca...use there was no Zulu name for it, I was called a lesbian. But we move on, transpire, transgress, and transform in many ways; so I’m just human. We admire Muholi's work for many reasons, but particularly because they changed the visual representation of their community and gave them a voice their own voice when the larger media failed them. That visual narrative wasn’t there in the way that I wanted to see it. And if it was, it was distorted, Muholi says. It was activism that led me to do the work that I do, because LGBTI media representation was so sensationalized and traumatic.
