If you plant shrubs for winter interest, make sure it is a native shrub with berries that sustain your local wildlife. There are many types of Buckthorn or Vibu...rnum. But what is native in your state can be a nuisance or even an invasive elsewhere. Non-native species often lack the specific nutrients that your local birds need. If you live in the USA and you are not sure what to look for; use the USA Plant Database. The birds will be grateful! https://plants.usda.gov/home See more

Raking Your Leaves Destroys Ecosystems. Learn More: https://herbshealthhappiness.com/raking-your-leaves-destro/ - and let's not even talk about leaf blowers!... (pet hate). This last fall, I did this: Just let the leaves end up where they wanted to. They get blown away / washed away / decompose naturally. Just cleared the gutters and drains and everything else was fine. TIP from your local neighbourhood FARMER! Over the next 4-6 weeks it’s mating season for coyotes. Please do not let your dogs (or cats) out alone or on the wal...king trail unleashed, have your dog on a leash (you should anyway that’s what’s posted at the entrance on the waking trails) A lone coyote (known as the Scout of the pack) may have your dog chase him and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits your dog. Then the outcome is tragic as they can & will attack/kill your and eat your pet. Your dog is the dinner. Just be aware it happens. *Coyote breeding typically peaks in late January and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets such as cats). Coyotes are a way of life for us livestock farmers your neighbours in this community so hopefully this will better help and understand the risks this time of year. This is also the time of year that livestock Guardian dogs are on extra patrol and are more vocal.
