This past Sunday, July 12 five of our graduates who are members in our choir offered Day by Day (composed by Harold W. Friedell) as a gift to the congregation. We thought you'd enjoy hearing it as well!
Several of our choir members are graduating this year. We wanted to take a moment to honor those students among our extended St. John’s Church family. We hope you enjoy watching this video as much as we enjoyed making it! May God bless them on their journeys.
If you've enjoyed the sound of our chimes, this 12-minute video will give you a new appreciation! St. John's Church was so well-known for its bells that people referred to us as "The Church with the chimes." Discover its history and capabilities in this video. Father Dunbar and Choirmaster-Organist, Steven Branyon provide historical context for the use of bells in worship and how the church acquired all of its 47 bells. See an example of the unique way these chimes were controlled in the past. Steven also demonstrates how he plays the chimes today.
We are blessed to have a John Challis harpsichord, which is known for its craftsmanship and durability. It was commissioned for our late Rector Father Ralston in 1953 and restored in 2017. In this five-minute video, organist-choirmaster Steven Branyon highlights the differences between a harpsichord and a piano. He also showcases this instrument’s range by playing Bach’s Invention No. 4 in D minor (BWV 775) and Invention in F Major (BWV 779) as well as The Addams Family theme song, for those who remember this classic television show.
Our choir has a new music offering this afternoon -- Anglican Chant: Psalms 13 & 130. May listen to it here: https://youtu.be/x3gPHhqwvYs
Morning Prayer on the 5th Sunday in Lent (Passion Sunday)
On Sunday, March 29, we will use the small two-rank organ in St. Mary’s Chapel for the live-stream service. Our music for this Passion Sunday is a sampling of chorales dignified, simple hymn-tunes that have been set and harmonized many times over the centuries. (Read Steven Branyon's full note here: stjohnssav.org/note )
Plan to join us 10 minutes before our 11 a.m. Sunday (3/29) live-stream (on St. John's Church in Savannah ) to enjoy a prelude played by our Choirmaster and Organist Steven Branyon on the chapel organ. He will also conclude Morning Prayer with a voluntary. You won't want to miss hearing his lovely performance.
