‘[] there is no nature more similar to Chopin. One made for the voice what the other made for the piano [].’ (‘La France Musicale’, 2 May 1841) On 31 January ...1797 Franz Schubert was born, one of the main representatives of Romanticism in music. He took the first music lessons with his father, music teacher, and then he studied in Vienna. Since 1812 he studied composition with Antoni Salieri. After finishing his studies he became a teacher in his father’s school. However, he resigned shortly after and devoted himself to composition. He went down in history as an author of songs: he wrote over 600 such pieces, many for the poems by J.W. Goethe. The catalogue of his pieces consists of symphonies, sacred music, chamber and piano works as well. Schubert’s art was not appreciated enough during his lifetime, as the artist died in Vienna in 1797 aged 31. Only after his death the works made him famous and recognised.

On 27 January 1756 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born! The output of the composer is unique although he lived only 36 years. Commonly, he is seen as the greates...t music genius ever. Although Mozart’s success is often associated with his innate talent, the composer said in the conversation that the key was his hard work: ‘They are wrong to think that I gained my abilities without any effort. I can assure you, my dear friend, that nobody spent so much time learning how to write music as I did. I don’t know a single composer whose works and technique I didn’t study carefully.’ For Fryderyk Chopin, who met Mozart’s music yet as a child, the master from Vienna was an artistic perfection. Chopin was inspired by Mozart, he performed his works in public and several days before his death he decided that Mozart’s Requiem would be performed at his funeral. : J. The Chronicles of the Chopin Competition | 1st Competition ‘The participant of the Chopin Competition practiced here.’ During the 1st edition of the Chopin ...Competition the minor issue occurred, namely, the organisers forgot to provide practice rooms for the pianists. The guests arriving from outside Warsaw stayed and practiced in private houses, and many jokes were made about it. However, the popularity of the Competition was so great that the Varsovians who had the participants in their flats were in fact lucky, they hosted very famous guests. For example, Dmitri Shostakovich was a participant in 1927. : Humorous drawing by Karol Ferster. The text in Polish: ‘The participant of the Chopin Competition practiced here.’

Grandpa Chopin | Grandpa’s Day in Poland Celebrating the day of all grandpas in Poland, we would like to remind you that Chopin was a grandpa as well. Of cour...se, we don’t mean Fryderyk, but Mikoaj Chopin, who had four grandchildren. Professor Chopin liked being a grandpa very much and often spent time with the youngest members of the family. He was convinced that his oldest grandson Henryk (b. 1833), whom he called ‘Bobo’ in the correspondence, would be a heir of his musical legacy. 2-year-old Henryk played the violin willingly and liked all violinists very much. Similarly to the old times, when he had done so with his own children, Mikoaj spent time with Henryk playing the instruments: ‘[] I play the violin and your nephew accompanies me, clapping: do you know it is the new melody from the old times? I used to play it on the flute; You broke down that flute when I gave it to you.’ (M. Chopin to F. Chopin in Paris, 11 April 1835) Besides Henryk, Chopin had younger granddaughter Ludwika (b. 1835) and two more grandsons: Fryderyk (b. 1840) and Antoni (b. 1843). The mother of all of them was their oldest daughter Ludwika. : Ludwika Jdrzejewiczowa nee Chopin with son Henryk, painted by Antoni Ziemicki, 1833.
