National Nutrition Month March 2015 March is the start of the National Nutrition Month's nutrition education and information campaign sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. National Nutrition Month started as the National Nutrition Week in 1973. It became a month-long campaign in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. Each year, the National Nutrition Month focuses on a specific nutrition-related theme.... The theme for this year's campaign is "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle", which encourages everyone to adopt eating and physical activity plans that are focused on consuming fewer calories, the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The Academy of Nutrition believes that these changes in our daily routines may help us to obtain and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote overall health. Nutrition in the United States Americans eat less than the recommended amounts of vegetables, fruits, whole-grains, dairy products, and oils. US adults consume an average of 3,400 mg/day of sodium, well above the current federal guideline of less than 2,300 mg daily. Typical American diets exceed the recommended intake levels or limits in four categories: calories from solid fats and added sugars; refined grains; sodium; and saturated fat. Americans eat less than the recommended amounts of vegetables, fruits, whole-grains, dairy products, and oils. MyPlate - Dietary Guidelines for Americans In June 2011, the United States government replaced the Food Pyramid with the new MyPlate image. The image is an easy-to-use visual cue to help Americans adopt a healthy lifestyle. The dietary guidelines focus on a balancing calories and physical activity. It also encourages people to consume healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars and refined grains. Visit the MyPlate website for a variety of interactive tools that make it easy for individuals to get a personalized recommendation for their daily calorie level.
