EDDIE CALDWELL'S LATEST PRIORITY IS PREVENTING BLUE LIGHTS ON THE REAR OF A FIRE TRUCK The North Carolina PBA has grown accustomed to Mr. Caldwell's efforts to destroy much needed law enforcement legislation. As Executive Vice President, General Counsel and lobbyist for the NC Sheriffs' Association, he has systematically worked behind the scenes to kill legislation that would provide minimal due process procedures and protections for officers when they report corruption in th...eir ranks. He has also gone to great lengths to block the PBA from having a permanent seat on the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission on which he serves as Vice-Chair. Several years ago, he even tried to hijack a bill for disabled officers by getting an amendment into a bill that would have put him into the NC retirement system. The PBA had to work for several days to get the amendment removed before the bill passed. Now Mr. Caldwell has moved on to fire trucks and public safety. Earlier this session, Representative Larry Potts and Senator Steve Jarvis introduced House Bill 448 and Senate Bill 374 (Authorizing Blue Lights on a Fire Apparatus). These bills were in response to several fire trucks getting struck in their district. The bills would simply allow fire departments to put a blue light on the rear of the fire truck and it could only used if the vehicle was stationary with the parking brake on. Mr. Caldwell thought this legislation was such a travesty that he chose to speak publicly in opposition at a transportation committee hearing on the House bill. The bill passed the committee, however, and later passed the House by a 101-11 vote. If that wasn't enough, he has now turned his attention to killing the legislation in the Senate. As officer deaths continue to rise and retention of officers has turned into a national crisis, we are saddened that firefighters' safety is now being compromised by one Mr. Eddie Caldwell. See more

Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, a Winston-Salem officer, responded to a domestic disturbance call at a local resturant in October of 2009. The ex-husband of an employee had active warrants and fled the scene after officers encountered him behind the restaurant. Sgt. Hutchens was fatally wounded after pursuing the suspect and died days later. House Bill 417 honors his sacrifice by providing current officers the opportunity to purchase up to four years of their service time if they have completed a number of years of service, specialized training, and/or higher education. In a critical time of attracting candidates to a career in law enforcement and keeping qualified officers in the profession, HB 417 also serves as a valuable recruiting and retention tool for North Carolina law enforcement agencies.

The North Carolina PBA continues to be confused by the actions of Rep. Sarah Stevens, NC 90. Earlier this year, Rep. Stevens served as a primary sponsor on House Bill 46 and worked to see it pass the House. House Bill 46 is a bill to strengthen Whistleblower Protections for State Law Enforcement Officers and employees. This week she voted against House Bill 7 in committee. House Bill 7 would give municipal law enforcement officers and employees whistleblower protections they don't have. Both bills are about open and transparent goverment and preventing retaliation against those that report corruption. This is not the first time Rep. Stevens has displayed such disparate treatment within the law enforcement community, but it is still disappointing during National Police Week, and when respect for officers is at an all-time low.

On Oct. 1, 1961, Congress asked President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15 as a day to honor peace officers. In 1962, President Kennedy issued the declaration for Peace Officers Memorial Day to be observed on May 15 and the week of May 15 to be recognized as National Police Week. Earlier this week, 394 names were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. The 394 names engraved on the memorial’s walls this year will join over 22,000 fallen officers already there. Today is a day of remembrance for those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Union County Sheriff's Office, Monroe, NC In other news, while performing interdiction work in the Sun Valley area Thursday afternoon, the UCSO Narcotics Bureau observed suspicious activity between a couple of fellas, pictured below. Upon further investigation, it turned out that a drug transaction involving the sale of a quantity of heroin occurred between the two. The suspect's half-baked plan not only occurred within 1000 feet of a school, but Mr. Page also brought his ...infant child along for the ride. Not to be outdone, Mr. Oxendine brought a handgun along, which is certainly not permitted given the fact that he is a convicted felon. Austin Lee Page, age 26, of Monroe faces several drug charges as well as a charge of Misdemeanor Child Abuse. DSS was notified following Page's arrest and the child was returned to the mother. Joshua Wendell Oxendine, age 30, of Stallings, faces numerous felony charges associated with the Sale and Delivery of Heroin as well as Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver a Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of a School. He also is charged with Possession of a Firearm by Felon. Both Page and Oxendine are enjoying some solitude at the Union County Jail. See more

Rick is a Sergeant with the Asheville Police Department and serves as the Mountain Chapter President of the NCPBA. His wife Angie is also in law enforcement and serves as a Lieutenant in CID with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office. On October 27th, Rick was admitted to ICU for pneumonia. This heart value replacement stemmed from a congenital heart defect that he was born with. Since his admission he has been placed on a ventilator and dialysis and been in the fight for his life as one doctor described. Although he is still hospitalized, he has made remarkable progress to the point that he is recovery is now being called a miracle. His continued recovery and healing will take several months and the NCPBA and PBF wants to remove the financial worry that goes with these situations. Please click the below link to donate. https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/ricktullisrecoveryfund 100% of the money received by the PBF will go to Rick Tullis for his care.
