Part 1 of 3: I thought I’d do a three part series this week in reference to Chronic Kidney Disease and why we should all be aware about the disease itself, but also, how to take preventative measures. Today’s topic: Diabetes. Stay tuned this week to see how it all ties together. Diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood gluco...se is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enoughor anyinsulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells. If left untreated, this can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and nerve damage. There is so much information out there regarding Diabetes and the different kinds, I’ve attached a great article to our bio for more information; seeing as how more than one million American adults are living with either diabetes or prediabetes (thank you @cdcgov ), it’s important to get educated and take preventative measures. Read up everyone! #nephrologyofga #nephrologyofgeorgia #drhermesgarciasanchez #diabetes #diabetesmellitus #diabetic #cdc #doctor #health #knowledge #knowledgeispower

Article Alert! According to The Mayo Clinic, a glycemic index diet is an eating plan based on how foods affect your blood sugar level. The glycemic index is a system of assigning a number to carbohydrate-containing foods according to how much each food increases blood sugar. So what is the purpose of this diet? The purpose of a glycemic index (GI) diet is to eat carbohydrate-containing foods that are less likely to cause large increases in blood sugar levels. The die...t could be a means to lose weight and prevent chronic diseases related to obesity such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This is a method I’m particularly fond of, and am always sharing with my patients because it’s a great way of learning to eat healthier, can be preventative, and helps those who have chronic illnesses like diabetes. Happy Friday everyone! Every couple of weeks I’ve decided to go through some of my day to day terminology with you all in order to help educate my patients and help everyone understand these medical terms. Today we’ll be talking about something I deal with often as a Nephrologist: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). What is CKD? According to the National Kidney Foundation, Chronic Kidney Disease is a gradual loss of kidney function. This causes conditions that damage your kidne...ys and decrease their ability to keep you healthy by doing their intended jobs: removing waste and extra fluids, control blood pressure, make red blood cells, keep bones healthy, and control pH levels (acid/base). What happens if you are diagnosed with CKD? If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in your blood and make you feel sick. You may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Also, kidney disease increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long period of time, while progressing through the five stages of CKD. What causes CKD? Chronic kidney disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life. Now that you have learned about CKD make sure you stay on top of your check ups and talk to your doctor if you have any doubts or questions. Link in bio to the National Kidney Foundation’s website for more helpful tools. #drhermesgarciasanchez #nephrologyofga #nephrologyofgeorgia #nephrology #chronickidneydisease #ckd #health #knowledge

Hello everyone! My name is Dr. Hermes E. Garcia-Sanchez and I am the founding member and practitioner of Nephrology of Georgia in Peachtree Corners. I wanted to introduce myself to you all here and let you know a little about what I do. I am originally from Valencia, Venezuela and graduated from the University of Carabobo Medical School in 2002. Once I moved to the United States I decided to continue my education. Here, I did my Internal Medicine internship and residency ...at Grady Hospital, VA Medical Center, and The Division of General Internal Medicine of Morehouse School of Medicine which I completed in 2013. Following this, I completed my fellowship at Emory University in Nephrology in 2016. After working in different healthcare facilities, I decided to open my own practice and focus on both Internal Medicine and Nephrology. I have always been passionate about the medical field and our healthcare system, but my main goal in what I do is to educate all of my patients in order to live healthier, more fulfilling lives - that is why I am excited to use this platform to do just that. Stay tuned for future posts regarding all things health and, of course, Nephrology of Georgia. @ Peachtree Corners, Georgia
