Newton County paved 3.5 miles of the Cricket Frog Trail in the unincorporated portions of the county recently. County crews poured asphalt on the trail from Zeigler Road to Sewell Road, the Mansfield city limits to the railroad trestle and from the Covington Bypass to East End Road. Newton County Crews have also cleared portions of the trail for future paving. I have been a big supporter of trails in Newton County for years and am thrilled that the County was able to contri...bute to this worthwhile project, Newton County Chairman Marcello Banes said. Supporting the use of trails in our community is so important it is part of Newton County’s Strategic Plan and a key part in not only the overall health of our community but also as an economic driver and a great contributor to the overall quality of life our residents can experience in Newton County. I am excited that the board voted to help support this important endeavor and create this wonderful partnership with Newton Trails. https://www.co.newton.ga.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=300

Four months ago, the Newton County Sheriff’s office held an expansion groundbreaking for its headquarters, located at 1515 Alcovy Road in Covington; since then, there has been visible progress made on the expansion project. Barnsley Construction Group, the project contractor, recently set the foundation and erected the walls for the additional 7,000 square feet of administrative space and 3,00 square feet of training space. The expansion project, budgeted at $2.9 million, was... funded by the 2017 Special purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and has the expected completion time of five months, dependent upon weather conditions. ------ For more information about the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, please visit www.newtonsheriffga.org or follow @newtonsheriffga on Facebook, twitter and Instagram.
