Built in 1837 by Thomas Bishop, merchant and farmer, the Bishop House is among the oldest existing University of Georgia structures. This house is one of the earliest remaining examples of Greek Revival architecture in Athens, the house was part of a farm that included a carriage house and stables, barns, a smokehouse, and fields for growing corn and vegetables. It is believed to be one of the first in Athens with running water, and it was long noted for beautiful landscaping that included boxwood plantings, flowering shrubs, and giant shade trees. The university’s first football field, Herty Field, was moved in 1911 with wooden stands by Dr. Steadman Sanford a University of Georgia president and Chancellor of the University of Georgia system,. To honor his contributions, the newly moved field was named after him as Sanford Field. In 1928 Sanford Stadium was built and it could seat 30,000 fans at a cost of just over $360,000. The first game at Sanford Stadium Field was played on October 12, 1929. The first opponent to meet UGA on the field in Sanford Stadium was Yale University. Thanks to Vernon Smith, aka "Catfish", Georgia won 15-0 and Yale hasn't returned to Athens, Georgia since.
