Both getting IN and getting OUT we’re profoundly meaningful experiences for me. I formed and continued lifetime friendships at Tech, learned more about who I am, created a vision for my life, had a lot of fun, learned much more chemistry, calculus, and physics than proved necessary for my life, and of course, I got a solid foundation in Psychology and the power of evidenced based/research based practices. I may not be a Hell of an Engineer, but I’m proud to be a Yellow Jacket...or more often a Ramblin’ Wreck! Congratulations to the Class of 2025! You got in...it’s up to you to decide what you do with this opportunity!

Just because you don't like the time change doesn't mean it's not happening. Radical acceptance can help you cope with time changes and so much more of life's unpleasantness. https://jessica-northrop.mykajabi.com//DaylightSavings&Rad

What are your thoughts about online therapy!

Today is National Stress Awareness Day. I think it's just a coincidence that it's the day after our national election, but it's certainly fitting! It's also fitting that today is the day that I have opened up a new FB group called Soothing the Mind: https://www.facebook.com/groups/soothingthemind I created this group to serve my community. The Northrop Connection has 5 therapists ready to serve, but it's still not enough. We understand that there is a great deal of stress and... unease in the world and that therapy is not available for everyone due to insurance, time, availability, or other reasons. So, this FB group will be a space to talk about self care, self-esteem, soothing, relaxation skills, problem solving and more. AND, starting in December, I'll be offering a FREE zoom support group on a weekly basis to help fill in gaps and to help people to feel as healthy as possible. Join our group today, and let me know what you most want to get out of this experience! https://www.facebook.com/groups/soothingthemind

It's been 7 months....and winter is looming. Mental health issues related to our lock down and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression and o...ther mental health disorders. NAMI, The National Alliance on Mental Health has a 24-hour helpline: 800-950-6264. The relapse and overdose rate has increased by 30% since March 2020. If you need help, please know that you’re not alone. Help is out there. If you have insurance, in many cases free telehealth therapy sessions are available. Because of the pandemic, many insurance providers are waiving copays as an incentive to keep you (and your provider) home. You can search for a therapist at psychologytoday.com, where credentials are verified and many private practitioners have a listing. If you don’t have insurance, search your local area for a community mental health provider (the number above can help you with that). Heck, even Walmart has health centers now that offer sliding scale therapy! There are tons of reputable YouTube channels to follow. Just search whatever symptom you are experiencing. Support groups abound! AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery and more are free and open! Some are virtual, but those that can have stayed open in person! I’m a licensed therapist, and I’d be happy to direct you to an appropriate resource if you are in need! You wouldn’t decide not to get a broken leg checked out because you don’t like the look of a cast, so please don’t delay seeking help for a problem with your emotions or substances because of any fear of stigma. Please share if you are willing!

This is not a direct quote, but it is very reminiscent of Self-Compassion by Kristen Neff. It's a really amazing read with some solid exercises to build your self-compassion. How does this feel to you?

Mental Health is HEALTH! It is so unfortunate that so much shame remains tied up in seeking help for mental health problems. I hear it all the time..."I think it's all in my head". As if this somehow diminishes the importance or value of what's happening. I always reply "well, I think your head is a pretty dang important part of you". Mental health is just as important as cardiovascular health, general fitness, digestive health, muscular-skeletal health, or any other physic...al aspect of your wellness. Just as with physical health, there are times when all you have to do to stay well is to watch your diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. And, there are times when you need to see a specialist and even take medication. Wherever you land on this spectrum, please know that taking care of yourself is a huge strength. 2020 has gotten many of us feeling a bit (or a lot) "off" emotionally. Please know that just talking it out can be enormously helpful. In honor of this year's World Mental Health Day, I challenge you to make choices today that will benefit your mental and emotional wellness: Hydrate Exercise Rest Watch a funny movie Reach out to a friend or family member Sit outside Eat a delicious meal Say something nice to yourself Express Gratitude Read Listen to Music Create Take a bubble bath. Do the dishes. Skip the dishes. Order In Take your medicine Stop and smell the roses... ASK FOR HELP! Enjoy your day! See more

2020 has served up so much turmoil and grief. Our lives and businesses have been changed, maybe forever. And that's pretty dang scary. It can put things in perspective in a both helpful and not so helpful way. We can be drawn to take action toward social justice and to create positive change locally and in their own lives (helpful). But, it can also create unhelpful thoughts...we can start to think that our personal business and personal stuff just isn't important enough. We ...can begin to doubt our hopes and dreams. This is neither true nor helpful! Listen! We can be incredibly empathic and insightful and caring AND still want to create a powerful business selling t-shirts, jewelry, makeup, professional services, healthcare, pet sitting, houses, or whatever it is that turns you on! If you have a dream, I urge you to CLAIM IT! Please let go of any belief that you have about waiting until 2020 is over to see what happens. Your dream is important. Your dream is amazing! Your dream is going to raise your level in the world, and achieving your dream is going to make the world a better place. I'm working every day toward my dream. I have built my business from scratch to a point where I am able to serve more and more of my community by adding therapists and creating more services! If you have a dream, OWN IT! CLAIM IT! Make it Happen! I'd be happy to help you along your way! If you are a business-minded mom, I'd like to invite you to my free FB group, Abundant Business Moms, where I will be presenting a free Abundance Masterclass from October 5-10. We'll be talking about actionable ways to claim your dream! All you need to do to participate is to join my free FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheAbundantMom/

So beautiful...take a moment and watch. You may cry, but that’s okay. It’s part of the human experience, and you are human. None of us is happy all the time. Let’s set reasonable expectations for our emotions.

Such lovely ideas, but parents, please don't feel the need to be perfect. You might be impatient just as often as you are patient, but every time you are able to show patience, it's going to help! Our kids are dealing with a lot right now, just as we all are. Do the best you can, and believe that your kids are doing the best they can! Assume the best, and their best is what you'll get!

Living with both depression and anxiety is really tough. The key is to remember that those voices are just lies. Your depression will sap all of your hope and will, and your anxiety will flat out lie to you. Allow the negative thoughts. Recognize that they are not true. Allow them to pass. If you don’t fight them or pay them too much attention, the thoughts will just pass more quickly. There’s a bunch of other stuff to do, of course, but this may help. Have a great day, and remember that you are enough!
