Confession. I let a client down this week. I had a client watch their dog die at home this week and I believe that I could have helped prevent this. Their dog died from a condition called GDV; a disease in which the stomach basically flips and twist in such a way to cause a life-threatening sequence of events. This is ALWAYS a fatal disease if not surgically treated quickly.( symptoms are retching, vomiting, gagging, swelling, severe discomfort, your dog may look very swolle...n in the belly). This client never called me or pursued medical care, they just thought it was a minor issue and it would resolve. It didn’t end well. This is not about the client, it is about me. Yes, maybe the owner could have suspected a major problem, but if I had educated them before this event, I wouldn’t be here today telling this story. Do I blame myself? Yes. One of my jobs is the educate clients, I love to do this and value my time in the exam room with you. I try to cover with you what I believe is most important and GDV is a topic I probably overlook sometimes. Call this a PSA. I promise to do the best that I can to help guide you with your pet care. I can’t expect a client to know what might be life-threatening every time, but I will try to give you more. The bottom line for me is if you have a concern, don’t be afraid to call us, nothing is a stupid question, if you believe your pet has an issue, it has an issue until we prove otherwise. If my client happens to read this story, please realize I am not mad at you. Things happen. My heart hurts too. If you made it to the bottom of this post, thanks for listening. Compassionately, Dr. Bangle Here's a nice blog from another veterinarian for further education. Hope you will share my post with at least one dog owner today. https://www.colliehealth.org/gastric-dilatation_volvulus/

My dog is not quite as polite, but she is right there under the table near one of my children...and you know the rest of the story.
Well, I believe we will add this to our "tricks" for nail trims, my techs will be thrilled with me when they draw the short stick....................
Good morning hoomans! No matter what stress you are having we are so glad to have extra time with you! More walks, more naps on your bed with you, more deep conversations because your people stopped listening, cameo’s on your computer thingy, and lots more tummy rubs, head bumps and chasing toys! It’s like Saturday every day! Thank you for loving us, taking care of us and including us!
Good morning. We want you to know we are open for your pet health concerns with no current hourly restrictions. We have implemented a curb-side service where we come and get your pet (cats in carriers please) and we then proceed with medical procedures, exams as normal. We are wiping each pet down as they come in the door and before they leave the office with a safe, pet friendly antiviral compound, as COVID-19 can exist on your pets fur. We are also offering "Facetime" or "Z...oom" at the time of the appointment so it's almost like being in the exam room with us. Thank you for understanding our protocols. Our level of service has not dropped and we are prepared to assist you with any pet concerns. My staff is healthy and ready to go! Currently, we do not have medication shortages or lab outages and we still have access to boarded Internist, Radiologist( ability for ultrasounds) and Cardiologist at our fingertips. Our standard of care is unchanged. Please text or call 706-769-7513 and we will get to work for you! Best to everyone from Dr. Stortz, Dr. Bangle and Staff
Is your dog’s bad breath trying to tell you something? Maybe it’s time to get their teeth cleaned. We have have the capability to take dental radiographs to check for root health, and a dental prophylaxis machine to clean and polish your pet’s teeth. Cleanings are important for the health of your pet’s teeth to avoid having multiple extractions. Swipe to check out our radiograph machine and our technician, Emilie, cleaning a patient’s teeth today, along with some extracted and diseased teeth. #oconeeveterinaryhospital #athensga #watkinsvillega #dental #dentalmonth #dentalawareness #oconeecounty #vet #vettech #veterinarian #dentalradiograph #dentalprophylaxis #dogteeth #disease #dentaldisease #extraction
Now welcoming our new Video Otoscopy and Earrigation Sytem! We are the only clinic in Clarke/Oconee county with this system. Wax balls can trap infections in the ear canal and at the base of the ear drum. With this system we can grab the wax balls and flush the canal and suction to clean up the debris. Check out this cool video we took this morning! #videootoscopy #waxball #waxremoval #earrigation #veterinary #vettech #veterinarian #athensga #oconeecounty #clarkecounty #suction #oconeeveterinaryhospital #earinfection
February is Dental Awareness Month! Swipe left to see a dental Xray that shows a cavity where the cursor is. Tartar buildup traps bacteria and infection. This bacteria can be released into the circulatory system and travel throughout the body. If you have questions or concerns please call us to schedule an oral exam for your pet. #cavity #dentalxray #periodontaldisease #caninedental #oconeeveterinaryhospital #athensga #watkinsvillega #oconeecounty #dentalmonth

Everyone meet Gunner! Gunner has been staying with us for the past month while his rescuer has been searching for a home that is a good fit for him. He was rescued from an abusive situation where he was crated 20+ hours a day and underfed. He was emaciated and heartworm positive when found. He has since undergone heartworm treatment and has been slowly gaining weight at a healthy rate. Gunner’s spirits are high as he is such a playful and loving dog. We are reaching out to help find his forever home. He would need someone that has time for him and would need to be the only pet. He is a 40-50lb Pit Bull Mix. If interested in adopting Gunner please contact us at 706-769-7513. #adopt#rescue #pitbull #oconeeveterinaryhospital#athensga #watkinsvillega
