Want a fun way to learn about the Bill of Rights? How about an Escape Room? Alexander Hamilton has stolen the amendments and put them in a safe. The students must race against time to unlock the safe, retrieve the amendments, and give them back to James Madison in time to have them voted on by Congress. We are happy to say that everyone completed the challenging task and escaped. Congratulations to these groups of fifth-grade students who did it the fastest.

Today, we celebrated Mary. Second-grade students placed a wreath on her statue in the church and in Joan’s Garden. Students in all grades brought in flowers from home and placed them at the feet of the statue of Mary in Joan’s Garden. We were also thrilled to honor Father Jim at Mass today as he celebrates the 42nd anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood in the Society of Mary.

We were delighted to have Mr. Hal Plummer, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, stop by OLA this morning to present Mrs. Conboy with her award for the Archdiocesan Schools Employee of the Year from OLA. Her husband was also on hand to see the presentation. Congratulations, Mrs. Conboy!

Choir classes are one of many things we had to give up this year to protect students and teachers. Our choir teacher, Ms. Sheppard, didn’t want to give up singing completely and began working on a solution. She offered students the opportunity to meet after school to sing in a socially distant, outdoor chorus. We are so thankful for this small choir of dedicated students. Here is their performance of What Child is This.

While we can't hold band classes at school this year, a group of dedicated students meet with Mr. Gibson after school in a virtual band class. Their Christmas performance is fantastic!

Our combined Red Ribbon and Spirit Week was a great success! With daily themes like Sock-it to Drugs, Red-y to be Drug Free, and Use Your Head, Don’t Do Drugs, students and staff had fun dressing out while learning lessons on living healthy, happy, and drug-free lives.

Today, our kindergarten students went to the polls to vote for their favorite book. They brought with them their voter registration card and cast their secret ballot. They even received an I Voted sticker when they finished.

Activities on our tenth annual Day of Service did not just happen on campus. Our eighth-grade students broke into small groups and joined neighbors from Oglethorpe Estates to help clean-up and beautify the island on Lanier Drive and trails off Inman Drive. Students picked up sticks and trash, relocated plants, cleaned street signs, and spread lots of mulch. A huge thank you to our neighbors who helped organized the event and came out to work with our students.

It was a very busy day at OLA as all our students were actively participating in our tenth annual Day of Service. This day is one way our students are able to live our mission and repay God for the gifts he has given to each of them and their families. We not only get to serve others as one community, but we get to honor the Sisters of Mercy, the first leaders of our school, and their fourth vow of service to others. Our tenth year looked a little different, but we didn’t let anything hold us back. We made our ten-year anniversary bigger and more special than ever before. Here is a small glimpse into some of the many activities that took place on campus.

It was P week, so on pajama day, pre-k planted parsley and chives, dill, and rosemary in the OLA gardens. SAGE Dining loves using the fresh herbs in the cafeteria.

One of our favorite volunteer activities in the lower grades is Mystery Reader. It looks a little different this year, but students and families are having fun with the virtual format. It has even opened opportunities for grandparents who live out-of-state to join in on the fun.
