Many Friends and Colleagues write these and I though you might enjoy them. January 27, 2021... Mark 3: 13-19 Natalie Justice Clergy Clinch Mountain District Focus Scripture Mark 3:13-19 Jesus Appoints the Twelve 13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve[a] that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means sons of thunder), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Devotion Every year, in United Methodist churches, there is a time when we appoint new leaders for the following year. This takes place in the fall, and the leaders begin in January of the new year. A list of names is presented. Each name represents an individual that has been gifted by God to do the role that they will be appointed to. Many churches hold a special time at the beginning of the year to install these leaders and have the congregation pray over them as they begin the ministry they have been called to do for the upcoming year. As we look at the list of Jesus’ disciples, we see the names of individuals called by Jesus. Each person is different and unique. They come from all walks of life. None of these individuals are perfect; yet, they are all called for the common purpose of serving in ministry. Jesus appoints these individuals to extend the work of the kingdom in this world. Friends, we are all needed and are all called to do the work of the kingdom. The call from God is not just to the pastor of your local church. All are called. It is not just to your Sunday School teachers. All are called. You are called. No one can do the mission of the church alone. We are all needed to go forth and do the work of the kingdom. Jesus knew this and called the disciples. We are all needed to do the work of the kingdom.
