We would like to say Thank You to ALL service members this Veteran’s Day, including those with 4 legs! Here are 10 facts about Military Working Dogs (MWDs) - There are about 2500 MWDs in service with about 700 serving overseas. - Dogs officially fought alongside American troops starting in WWII although historically it dates back to the Revolutionary War. ... - The US military has puppy development specialists who work with puppies from birth until they begin training at roughly 6 months. - The military working dog breeding program is based out of Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. - Roughly 50% of dogs make it through training. - The average career of a MWD is 8-9 years. Over 90% of retired MWDs are adopted by their handlers. - Many retired MWDs find service in law enforcement after retiring from the military. - Not all MWDs are German Shepherds. Many branches will use Labrador Retrievers as they are highly trainable for bomb or drug detection. The elite Navy SEALS use Belgian Malinois for their compact size and ability to jump from planes and rappel from helicopters. Dutch Shepherds are also used. - The value of a fully trained bomb detection dog is over $150,000! - Rin Tin Tin originally was a German war dog before being rescued from the battlefield by an American soldier.
