If you have VINCAS/Periwinkles in your garden, they are probably going to seed about now. Look for the small pods under the blooms. They look like tiny, green pea-pods (see photo below). They will turn yellow and burst open with tiny black seeds which will come back next year. I break them off or sweep up the seeds and scatter them somewhere else that I want them to come up. Flowering Vinca is one of the premier flowering bedding plants for sunny, hot areas. It is drought...-tolerant and can thrive in any soil provided that it is well-draining. Sounds just like Taylor County, right? Vincas are also a low-maintenance plant, so they are perfect for the gardener who does not have a lot of time to spend in the garden. This is a good choice too, because deer do not like them. Vincas comes in many shades of pinks, reds, mauves, and whites and blooms abundantly throughout the summer. I love Vincas. I have some that actually lived through the winter and are huge. See more
