As we approach the end of what many consider one of the worst years of our lives, one thing is certain, it has been the worst year in the lives of law enforcement. We expect these men and women to risk their lives every day of the year to keep all of us safe. We expect them to respond to deaths on the road, as well as deaths in our homes, and don’t give a second thought as to how this is affecting them physically and emotionally. We expect them to make decisions and take a...ctions that require them to make split second decisions, then chastise them for not giving it more consideration before taking action. We expect them to be pure professionals, then treat and pay them as amateurs. Something has to change, and that something is I, me, you, us, we! We don’t need to be talking about defunding Law Enforcement, we need to be, not talking about more funding, but actually doing it. These men and women need and deserve more pay, they need and deserve better equipment, they need and deserve better training. Check the odometers on their vehicles. Would you stake someone’s life on a vehicle that has been driven hard for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more? And I am not just talking about the life behind the wheel, but about the life or lives at the other end of the call that depend upon rapid response. And their physical bodies become just as worn. Spend a day wearing a bullet proof vest and an equipment belt around your waist, all weighing 40 lbs or more. Do that day after day, and see the result, especially when added to the emotional toll of the job. For those of us that are the citizens controlling who gets elected, we need to make sure our elected officials know our expectations of their treatment of law enforcement as budgets and policies are set. As citizens and neighbors, we need to show positive support to law enforcement in our community through our talk and our actions. Whenever we encounter law enforcement, offer a simple thanks, an encouraging word, a prayer, and/or a meal or a cup of coffee. By the way, most of them really do like donuts! As we pray, as we show our support, let us not forget the law enforcement families that wait at home for their loved one to safely return after spending the day serving all of us. Those families have a most difficult role, one that requires many sacrifices so that their loved one can fulfill their calling to serve others. This is so very, very unacceptable! How has today’s society become so warped in their morals, and societal norms? If you are willing to kill a law officer, then no one is safe around you. This has to stop!
