Recently, a new type of sleep medication has become available for practitioners to prescribe; these new medications target Orexin, also known as hypocretin, which is a neuropeptide that regulates arousal, wakefulness, and appetite. Most sleep aids help induce sleep, but these new medications help with staying asleep. When Orexin spikes it can cause that awakening in the middle of the night that causes the feeling of not being able to fall back asleep. These new sleep aids target Orexin and block it from acting on the brain to block that wakefulness feeling.
