If you are getting tired of being stuck at home, we welcome visitors to the gardens at Piccadilly Farm. The gardens are open year round during daylight hours. Here are two more interesting plants blooming in the gardens right now, and they both have the word indigo in their common name. The purple/orange flowered plant on the right is False Indigo or Amorpha fruticosa and the pink flowered plant on the left is Indigofera kirilowii. The Amorpha fruticosa is located at the e...dge of the parking lot to the left of the bulletin board. The unusually colored, fragrant flowers look like a Buddleia or Butterfly Bush, but the leaves are very similar to Indigofera. It is a native to the Southern United States and attracts bees (yes, it was covered with them when I took this photo) and butterflies. Interestingly, Amorpha fruticosa does produce indigo pigment but not enough to be used commercially which is why it is known as False Indigo. The Indigofera kirilowii, commonly called indigo, is growing along the edge of the paved driveway just below the parking lot near the picnic pavilion. This plant is native to Korea, China and Japan. It is a low growing (2-3'), suckering shrub, which provides a nice dense ground cover in our garden. Lovely pink, pea-like flowers cover the plants beginning in May and continuing intermittently until September. It is related to Indigofera tinctoria, which is the species that has been used for many years to produce indigo dyes.

Introducing another great native plant that is putting on a show right now. It is called Viburnum nudum 'Winterthur' and is a compact cultivar of a native viburnum commonly called possumhaw viburnum. This plant can be found in low moist woodlands and swampy areas along the eastern coast of the U.S. from Connecticut to Florida. As the scientific name implies, this plant is deciduous, so in the winter it is "nude". Growing to about 6' tall and wide with glossy bright green ...leaves in the spring through summer, and large flat topped fragrant white flowers in May to June. The clusters of edible fruit change color from light pink to darker pink, then from blue to dark purple. Recommend planting two or more shrubs in a group for best berry production. In the fall, the foliage develops a pretty dark maroon to purple color providing a nice contrast with the colorful berry clusters. 'Winterthur' is an introduction of Winterthur Gardens in Delaware. Piccadilly Farm is remaining open for individual sales appointments where COVID-19 safety measures are practiced, or for contact free parking lot pick up of plant orders.

We are training the future generation in nursery operations at Piccadilly Farm. Our grand daughers, Valerie (cat shirt) and Anna, are learning to help us grow plants! We are spending our quarantine time bringing in a lot of new plant materials that will soon be ready to purchase. Check out our plant lists on our website!

Here's a great plant in the gardens at Piccadilly Farm (also for sale in the nursery): Magnolia macrophylla (from the Greek words Macro meaning large and phyllon meaning leaf) /Common name: Bigleaf Magnolia. As the name indicates, this native tree has the largest simple leaves (up to 30 inches long) of any tree indigenous to North America. These huge leaves are medium green with silvery gray undersides. Though a native, it is rare and is found mainly in rich woods located near rivers, creeks or ravines in the southeastern United States. This medium sized tree is happy as an under story tree, having a narrow pyramidal shape reaching 30-40’ tall. Lovely white flowers are fragrant, huge 8-12 wide, blooming in May. They resemble the blooms of other magnolias, but just much larger.

COVID-19 (Corona Virus) Information from Piccadilly Farm: We are monitoring the news on the virus and will try to follow recommendations received from health experts and the government. We feel that with our outdoor environment and small number of customers (usually less than 10) at any given time, we are a safe place for people to visit and escape from a bit of the madness going on in the world around us. For now, we will continue to be open on Fridays, Saturdays and by a...ppointment through the end of April. If you would prefer a "no contact" situation, but need plants for a garden project, you can order plants for pickup in our parking lot and pay over the phone by credit card. If you are not feeling well, we request that you stay at home and seek medical attention. We are trying to keep surfaces and restroom sanitized daily, and are providing Clorox wipes so that you can clean your hands while shopping. And if you need some place to bring your kids to run around while they are out of school, we invite you to enjoy our gardens! PS We may be a nursery, but not one that takes care of children, so please supervise them so no one gets hurt. See more
