This historic building was built as the Plaza Hotel in 1904 and was last renovated in 1959 when the ground, second, and third floors were redeveloped. The fourth floor, however, had never been updated or reused since serving as a hotel. In 2017, Piedmont Construction Group was selected to renovate the 16,000-square foot building in downtown Macon for NewTown Macon, which included luxury lofts and two commercial storefronts. Overall, the project consisted of extensive structu...ral repair, roofing, wood framing, drywall, hard tile, paint, acoustics, fire sprinkler system, complete MEP systems, and restoration to historic hardwood floors. Specifically, the project brought the retail spaces on the first floor up to code regarding fire ratings and reconstructed the lobby to add a foyer for the elevator. As part of the Spearman Lofts, twelve new luxury lofts were constructed on the second, third, and fourth floors, with four units on each floor. The fourth-floor rooms are the most unique, with a historic skylight in the lobby, original molding, and distinctive unit layouts. The Historic Macon Foundation awarded the project in 2019 with a Residential Preservation Award. According to the National Park Service’s definitions of preservation, rehabilitation, or restoration, the residence must be preserved to receive the award. The Foundation defines the preservation award as a project that places a high premium on retaining all historic fabric through conservation, maintenance, and repair. It reflects a building’s continuum over time, through successive occupancies, and the respectful changes and alterations made.

#PiedmontConstruction enjoyed building this unique project at Georgia Southern University. The 350-square foot area includes a wooden framed deck and a sally-port entry to keep the waterfowl secure. #PiedmontConstruction Group recently finished a small but meaningful project at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. Teaming up with Leadership Macon’s 2019 class, we created an outdoor classroom by constructing auditorium seating and pouring a concrete slab which shape pays homage to Native Indians who occupied the land. In doing so, archeological precautions were taken not to disrupt the area or possible artifacts located on the grounds. #ProjectComplete

This new student housing at Middle Georgia State University in Macon broke ground on May 17, 2019. The building departed from recent wooden structure projects in favor of a steel and concrete construction to provide higher quality, durability, and longevity. With energy efficiency as a primary focus, the design includes features such as a variable refrigerant flow HVAC system, commercial tankless water heaters, and LED lighting throughout. The project, delivered through the ...design-build delivery method, is a shining example of how projects are achieved meeting the goals and requirements of owners while using agencies all within budget and on schedule.
